Petition launched to give voters power to recall MPs

SHOULD you have the power to recall your MP if they abuse their position? The campaign group Unlock Democracy certainly thinks so. In the wake of Maria Miller's resignation from the Cabinet for over claiming expenses, it has launched a petition calling for voters to be given the power of recall. Under the group's proposals, if enough constituents signed an official petition there would be a local referendum asking constituents whether they wished to recall their MP from Parliament and hold a by-election. The current MP would be allowed to stand in the by-election if they wished. The Conservatives and Liberal Democrats pledged to introduce a system of recall in their Coalition Agreement in 2010 but dropped their plans to do so earlier this year. Labour, the Green Party and UKIP support the introduction of the right of recall.
