THE operators of Grimsby Swimming Pool have promised users will not be left out of pocket after it was confirmed the building would be closed until at least Friday following the discovery of asbestos.
Parts of the building in Scartho were closed on Friday after asbestos was found in the main pool hall, and the entire building was then closed over the weekend.
It means many young swimmers face having their lessons cancelled.
The nearby Cleethorpes Leisure Centre was closed earlier this month for a £2.5 million refurbishment and is not expected to open again until January, and many lessons had already been transferred to Scartho.
Craig Morgan, general manager of Lincs Inspire, which operates leisure centres in North East Lincolnshire, said: "No one will be out of pocket for any missed lessons. We will ensure affected customers are given the appropriate credit towards the next term, credit to use other facilities or a refund – whatever is appropriate for their circumstances."
Parent Emma Cox said on the Grimsby Telegraph's Facebook page that she had not been notified of the closure ahead of her daughter's planned swimming lesson on Monday.
"They have my home and mobile number as well so no excuse, really poor service," she said.
"I shall definitely be wanting a refund for my lesson now."
The environmental clean-up of the building began at the weekend following the closure of the facilities to the public.
But additional work was recommended to owners North East Lincolnshire Council.
A statement from the authority said: "We expect this to take at least three days, followed by tests to check that the asbestos dust has been cleared.
"Our first priority is the safety and wellbeing of our staff and the people who use Grimsby swimming pool.
"As a precaution, all facilities at the site will remain closed until the work is complete.
Lincs Inspire said phones at Scartho would not be answered while work is being carried out and advised customers with swimming enquiries to direct them to jane.hill@lincsinspire.com or danny.phillips@lincsinspire.com
Mr Morgan said: "Lincs Inspire would like to thank customers for their patience at this time and reassure them that every effort will be made to minimise the disruption.
"The company takes health and safety of its customers and staff very seriously and will only reopen when it is right to do so.
"Our staff will attend to customers' enquiries as efficiently as possible and we will keep the website as up-to-date as possible as further information is available.
