Grimsby Town boss calls on squad to create more for strikers

GRIMSBY Town boss Paul Hurst has backed his under-fire frontline to find their golden touch soon – ideally in tonight's game with Dartford (7.45pm).

So far this season, the Mariners have found the net on nine occasions – failing to score on their last two outings.

Hurst recognises that the lack of goals is becoming a cause of frustration in some quarters, but, given the quality of the strikers at Town's disposal, he is not worried about the firepower of his squad.

Instead, his main focus is on the number – and quality – of goalscoring chances that are currently being served up to a frontline that he insists would be the envy of most teams in the Conference.

He said: "There's been a bit made about us not getting on the scoresheet that much and I understand that frustration, but I truly believe that we've got the players here to score the goals we need.

"The mix between them is pretty easy – it's not an issue, it's about getting the right ones in when they're on form.

"We need to create more chances and the lads that we've got will take them if they come along."

On Saturday, Hurst appeared to dispense with the previously favoured 4-3-3 formation, choosing instead to play Ross Hannah and Lenell John-Lewis up front in a 4-4-2 system.

And he says he has no doubts that any one of Town's strikers can play in the system, should he choose to use it again against the Darts tonight.

He added: "There's also young Dale Southwell, who hasn't made the squads of late, but certainly of the lads that played at Chester on Saturday, I know they can all play in a front two, without a shadow of a doubt.

"It is different to how we have been playing before but I've no qualms that there's goals in us.

"I think a lot of teams would be interested in the strikers that we've got at the club. I'm not unduly worried that we haven't scored that many because I know the goals will come."

On tonight's clash with Dartford, he added: "After the Braintree win at home, we then went to Halifax and after that, we were on a bit of a downer.

"On Saturday, we had mixed feelings, but the spirit that the players showed was excellent.

"We now need to build on that and get the victory at home in front of our own fans.

"It would be nice to get back to winning ways and go on a bit of a run."
