PUT the kettle on!

Armed Forces members and public service workers can enjoy a free hot drink and sandwich in Grimsby every Friday thanks to a charity's new initiative.

Care 4 All wants to "give something back" by offering the likes of the Armed Forces, police, fire and ambulance crews, and health workers, free drinks and nibbles at their three cafés each Friday.

The Grimsby charity, which provides services for the elderly and disabled, has cafés in Queen Street, Freshney Green, and at the Oasis Academy Wintringham.

Catering manager Katie Billingham said she hoped Forces Friday would become a success in the future following its launch last week. She said: "We want to support our local services and as a local charity we feel we should give something back.

"The whole idea is aimed at people like forces members, police officers, fire and ambulance crews and nurses.

"Someone like a passing PCSO might welcome the chance to pop in for a hot drink and a sandwich.

"Hopefully it will take off in the coming weeks. It's just a chance for people to come in and have a break and relax."

On the menu every Friday are sandwiches, tea, coffee and hot chocolate. One of those who took advantage of the new initiative on launch day at the Queen Street site was Army Sergeant Wayne Okopskyj, who is now based at Grimsby's Army Careers office.

Sgt Okopskyj, known as 'Sergeant Ski' said: "It's a great idea, I'm all for anybody that wants to help the forces.

"We're an integrated part of the community and this is a great way to integrate further as well as to network."

Healing-born "Sergeant Ski" recently returned to the area after 36 years in the Army.

His long career as an infantry soldier has taken him around the globe.

"You name it, and I've been there," he said.

Following his retirement from the Army in May, Sgt Okopskyj took up the role at Grimsby's careers office in Freeman Street.

Care 4 All is part of the Care Plus Group, which is the main provider of community based health and social care services in North East Lincolnshire.

It exists "to support people to live fulfilled and enriched lives of their choice".
