A 23-year-old suffered serious head injuries in an attack on Grimsby Road, Cleethorpes.
Horrified onlookers saw three men stamp on the head and kick the man on the ground near the junction of Barcroft Street at around 6.45pm.
East Midlands Ambulance Services paramedics treated the man at the scene before taking him to Diana, Princess of Wales Hospital, Grimsby.
Thanks to descriptions by passersby obtained by Humberside Police, officers chased three men. Two were later arrested near to Blundell Avenue.
