DOG waste bins and litter bins at an amenity area have been cleaned up after the Grimsby Telegraph highlighted the problem to council officers.

Bins at Hardy's Recreation Ground had not been emptied for about five weeks and were overflowing with mess and rubbish.

Residents contacted East Marsh ward councillor Steve Beasant, who brought the problem to the attention of the Grimsby Telegraph.

He said: "The bins were jammed full with dog mess. It stinks.

"We are trying to encourage residents to act responsibly and pick up litter, but the council has not emptied the bins. I could not believe it when I saw it."

He said the field is regularly used by footballers and school children often walk past the bins.

Weelsby Street resident Ricky Farrow, 68, said: "It was a health hazard. People could contract an illness from it."

Councillor Peter Wheatley, pictured above, portfolio holder for regeneration and environment at North East Lincolnshire, said: "We'd like to apologise for missing this bin recently.

"This was due to a change of duties internally, and unfortunately this was not picked up.

"We have now emptied the bin and will ensure this is checked and emptied regularly.

"The street cleansing team empty more than 1,000 floor and post-mounted bins every week."

He urged residents to report overflowing bins directly to North East Lincolnshire Council on 01472 313131.
