SUPERHEROES saved the day for charity at three local primary schools yesterday.
William Barcroft Junior School, Marshchapel School and Grainthorpe Primary School all had a special fancy dress day with characters including Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman, The Hulk and even Bananaman walking the halls.
Luckily, there were no villains or natural disasters to deal with – but they did plenty of good work raising money for St Andrew's Children's Hospice – which cares for children with terminal illnesses and provides vital respite for their families.
Lynne Lemon, fundraiser for St Andrew's, said: "Life is a struggle for some children and they require constant care – which we provide.
"It costs £1.5 million a year to run St Andrew's and every bit of money we receive is used to look after these children and their families."
William Barcroft pupil Owen Watson, 11, who came as Superman, said: "There are lots of children who don't have much and they need some help which is why we are raising the money.
"I'm very lucky because I can go out and play on my scooter when I'm bored, but some children are too ill to do that."
Classmate Ellie-May Bird, 11, who came dressed as The Incredible Hulk, said: "It was really sad hearing about those children because we have a lot and they don't have much at all – I felt very sorry for them.
"It's not very nice hearing about things like that but it made me really glad we were doing something to help."
Head teacher of William Barcroft Claire Constantopoulos said she was very proud of the children for their efforts.
She added: "We have always supported St Andrew's Children's Hospice and it was nice for Lynne to come in and explain exactly what it was the children were raising money for.
"It made them realise how lucky they are and also taught them about where the money goes and exactly who it helps.
"We've seen some excellent costumes today and although I let the staff off this time – they won't escape the next fancy dress day."
Executive head teacher for Grainthorpe and Marshchapel schools Anna Coney said: "Some of our children and staff have directly benefited from St Andrew's great service in the past so we wanted to give something back.
"We hold the event every year and the costumes are always fantastic – one of the teachers even came as Superman yesterday."
