A real incentive to take on young unemployed

WOULD taking on this motivated young man be more affordable if you knew that the Government would give you up to £2,275 towards his salary?

If so, you should look into the Wage Incentive, which encourages businesses to take on young people who are unemployed and need a helping hand.

Companies will receive an incentive to take on an unemployed person, aged 16 to 24, for 26 weeks or more – worth £1,137.50 for 16-29 hours a week and double that for 30 or more.

Jennifer Vincent, employer adviser at the Jobcentre Plus, said: "Taking someone on is a risk in this economic climate but this financial incentive can minimise that risk and guarantee they get something back.

"It helps people who have been unemployed for a long period of time so are not getting any experience and this is a helping hand to get them back into work before they get lost in the system."

As part of the Your Life Your Future Campaign, we will be highlighting some of the people looking for a job who are eligible for the scheme.

One of those people is Nathan Blythe, 19, of Lovett Street, who has been unemployed since he had to quit a chemical engineering apprenticeship because of a medical problem – which has now been resolved.

Nathan went to Tollbar and got seven GCSEs, all but one of which were C grade or above. His only D was in English and he has since done a course with his apprenticeship which is equivalent to a C grade in the subject.

After school, he went on to the Grimsby Institute and did levels one and two in vehicle maintenance and repair before going on to the apprenticeship with the Humberside Engineering Training Association.

He has been looking for work since he left in 2010 and has since completed the Cat Zero programme, obtaining qualifications in manual handling, food safety, health and safety, first aid and control of substances hazardous to health.

Nathan said: "I'm the sort of person that always wants to learn new skills which is what I have been trying to do while looking for work.

"Getting a job means the world to me.

"It will give me a chance to actually live my life and achieve something.

"I'm a very hands-on person and would like to use some of the skills I learned studying mechanics at college, but I'm open-minded."

Call the Jobcentre Plus on 01472 622317 if you are interested in employing Nathan – and getting a subsidy from the Government to do so.
