Dave Boylen: Kevin Moore was a credit to his home town

IT was sad to hear the news of the death of my ex team-mate Kevin Moore who unfortunately has been very ill for a number of years.

I first got to know Kevin when he was taken on by Grimsby Town as a young apprentice in the 1970s.

Obviously with his family connection to Grimsby Town through his dad who also played for Town, Kevin had a standard to live up to, and that is not easy to follow.

The lad's character was just magnificent – a really laid back attitude with an asset of determination in his ambitions to climb into the first team at the earliest opportunity that came his way.

I have to tell you about one incident in the dressing room which Kevin was involved in.

Kevin at the time was a very young lad and we in the first team had had a bad result on the Saturday, so the manager at the time called all the players into the dressing room on the Monday morning to give us a right roasting.

Unfortunately, the manager called for the young apprentices to be involved as well, which we senior players did not agree with.

Just as the manager was talking, one of our senior players pointed out to everybody about the size of Kevin's boots which were rather large – and it broke the ice because everybody fell about laughing, including Kevin! He had that lovable personality.

I would like to give this final tribute to Kevin Moore – you believed in your own ability and you were a credit to your family and home-town. To you and your family, God bless you all.

Dave Boylen,

A GTFC team-mate of Kevin Moore
