AFTER 18 years between them, two dedicated members of the Grimsby, Cleethorpes & District Civic Society are stepping down from the committee to let "new blood" take on their roles.
Founder and chairman Paul Genney has created a following of 170 members who focus on improving heritage, environment and planning in our area – and now he has decided it's time for change to focus on his novel writing and career as a barrister.
Also following his lead is secretary Pauline Lee, who has enjoyed her time at the society for more than six years and plans to enjoy her spare time travelling.
Paul, 72, of Grimsby, said: "I decided to set up the society ten years ago because so many towns have them, but ours didn't.
"I thought it would be a good idea because civic societies do an awful lot of good to improve the quality of life for people who live in the area.
"The society really has gone from strength to strength, with a huge community spirit. People are very proud of where they live and there is huge potential for Cleethorpes."
Paul wishes he could have set up an annual Founders Day for Havelock and Grim, saying: "I have a few regrets that I wish I could have achieved, and I would have really liked to have seen a Founders Day. It would really benefit the community.
"And also it would have been good to see a statue commemorating the Grimsby Chums from the First World War."
Paul is currently writing his third novel, Pleading Guilty, which is part of a trilogy.
He said: "I am stepping down for new energy and a breath of fresh air to step in.
"Current vice-chairman Martyn Turner, who is a younger chap than me, will take on the role as chairman."
Pauline, of Cleethorpes, said she has enjoyed the opportunity to meet so many new friends.
Se said: "I believe that six years in this position is long enough and I will get to enjoy travelling to America and the simple pleasures in life, such as walking and baking.
"I have learnt so much about the history of our area and enjoyed many guest speakers such as Alan Dowling and David Robinson OBE."
