Labour's parliamentary candidate for Lincoln has been accused of "putting the people of Grimsby down" on Twitter.
Lucy Rigby made a joke about shadow minister Angela Smith, who she welcomed on a visit to Lincoln today, being from the town.
She tweeted: "Really looking forward to welcoming Shadow Minister @angelasmithmp to #Lincoln today - have warned people that she grew up in Grimsby."
The comment provoked an angry reaction from Sophie Bennett, who tweeted: "It appears Lucy Rigby has never visited or met any of the wonderful people of Grimsby like myself."
The Conservative candidate for Great Grimsby, Marc Jones, also failed to see the funny side, accusing her of "putting the people of Grimsby down."
And in an apparent dig at both Ms Rigby – and his Labour opponent in Grimsby, Melanie Onn - he said: "I say Grimsby is a fine town that will be made better by electing a genuine, progressive Conservative MP rather than one of this new breed of Miliclones from the all women shortlist system."
Ms Rigby is not the first high profile figure from Lincoln to poke fun at Grimsby on Twitter.
In November, Lincoln City footballer Kegan Everington described it as a "s*** town" before going on to use abusive language about the people who live here.
