LAST night's postponement at Gateshead gave Grimsby Town boss Paul Hurst more opportunity to widen his search for a new player that will 'excite the fans'.

The Mariners' scheduled FA Trophy Second Round replay was called off yesterday following a lunchtime pitch inspection at a wintry International Stadium.

The tie has been rearranged for Monday evening (7.45pm), with focus now shifting to Saturday's Conference clash with leaders Barnet – and the ongoing search for reinforcements.

Following the loan capture of Ollie Palmer from Mansfield, Hurst says he's happy with his lot in the striking department, but still wants to find someone who can 'make a difference' at the business end of the pitch.

"I want to add quality – it's as simple as that," he said.

"I've had a look at the squad and I think we would benefit from having another player who can excite the fans and go past people.

"Ollie Palmer has come in and so I think we're okay on the striking front for now – in saying that, if the right player becomes available, then of course you look at it.

"But we're looking at other areas and it might be a winger or an attacking midfielder – we'll have to see. We want someone who we feel could make a difference at the top end of the pitch – that doesn't necessarily have to be a striker – there's more ways to skin a cat after all."

As well as looking at incomings, Hurst revealed that he's had 'one or two' enquiries from other clubs for his players, but insists that nothing is imminent.

He continued: "Conversations are still taking place away from the training ground and we'll have to wait and see how they progress, but at this moment in time, there's nothing to report.

"We've had one or two tentative enquiries come in for our players – I'm not going to say who, but there haven't yet been any enquiries for Hamish Watson, for example, who we'd like to get a loan.

"Transfers are not straightforward, but talks are ongoing and when something is agreed, we will let everyone know."
