The trust which operates Grimsby's hospital missed its Government-set target for A&E waiting figures from October to December 28, figures released today show.

Covering Christmas, the figures for October 5 to December 28 show Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust (NLAG) saw 91.8 per cent of patients in A&E in four hours or less.

The government target for the country is 95 per cent.

Figures also show 92.9 per cent of patients were seen in four hours or less for A&E, single speciality department, other A&E and minor injury unit.

Nationally, the performance is the worst quarterly result since the target was introduced at the end of 2004.

Dr Sarah Pinto-Duschinsky, director of operations and delivery for NHS England, said: "In the immediate run up to Christmas the NHS treated 446,500 A&E attendees, up 38,000 on the same week last year. And there were 112,600 emergency admissions – the highest number in a single week since we started publishing performance figures in 2010.

"We faced similar demand over Christmas itself. In the week ending December 28 A&E attendances were up more than 31,000 on the same period last year, meaning we successfully treated more patients in under four hours than ever before."
