MOTORISTS crossing the Humber Bridge can expect delays until spring.Traffic is currently reduced to a single lane in both directions while work to replace the A-frames – which connect the main span bridge deck to the towers – is carried out.
Until completion of the works in spring, traffic is down to single file to prevent overloading the bridge.
During peak times, drivers have reported queuing for up to half an hour on the bridge in "painfully" slow-moving traffic.
Numerous drivers have contacted the Humber Bridge Board to complain about the traffic chaos, and staff working in the toll booths are also coming under fire from angry motorists, fed up of queues.
Bridgemaster Peter Hill said: "The last thing we want to do is to hold people up.
"If I could solve this, I would.
"I want to assure people that we are looking at ways that we can improve things.
"We are noticing increased frustration amongst drivers."
A new electronic toll collection facility is expected to be open on the Humber Bridge next summer, meaning motorists can pay by electronic method to cross the bridge.
Yesterday, Scunthorpe-based building and civil engineering contractor Britcon confirmed that it had completed its infrastructure work on the bridge.
