TWO health care support workers at Louth County Hospital were assaulted during a disturbance there, a court heard.

Phillip Raddings, 46, of Monks' Dyke Road, Louth, admitted assaulting Deborah Laking and Christine Raithby on June 2 last year.

Cleethorpes-born Raddings had been due to be sentenced for the assaults at the hospital in High Holme Road, Louth, but his case was adjourned after Skegness magistrates refused to deal with it because of his bad behaviour.

He repeatedly used colourful language in court and his antics gave further cause for concern when he went over and stood very close to a female legal adviser.

Raddings told the court: "I have had a year-and-a-half of this. I didn't do anything wrong in the first place. I didn't have any Legal Aid. Nothing."

He had earlier been complaining loudly outside the courtroom about being kept waiting all day for his case.

Presiding magistrate Sally McCracken refused to let the case continue and Raddings was told he would have to come back another day.

A probation officer later told the court in the absence of Raddings that he had "detected some aroma of alcohol but not to excess" on the defendant.

After the hearing, Sue Cousland, chief nurse and director of operations at Lincolnshire Community Health Services NHS Trust, said: "The Trust remains absolutely committed to supporting all of its staff in their efforts to provide a service to the public of Lincolnshire and will continue to take a zero tolerance approach to any threats or acts of verbal and physical abuse against them."
