IMMINGHAM'S Post Office could be moved to the centre of the town as part of a major revamp of the network.
The branch, in Pelham Road, at the top end of the town, could close and be moved almost half a mile to inside the McColl's store in Kennedy Way.
A consultation has been launched to gauge the opinion of residents, but the move has been welcomed by a ward councillor.
The move would see the Post Office open for 104 hours a week. Access will be available every day.
Councillor Mike Burton, ward member for Immingham and former mayor, said: "When we had more than one Post Office it was fine where it was, but in many ways I am delighted it could move to a more central position.
"The extra opening hours and longer hours will be a great advantage to shift workers who live in the area.
"Wherever it is, it's going to be inconvenient for someone. It must be inconvenient for people who live at the bottom end of town now.
"A central position will make it accessible for everyone."
He added: "This is the way I think things are going. It is a way of preserving services for the Post Office.
"If moving it inside another shop means we keep the Post Office and we don't have to go to Grimsby or wherever else, then that is a good thing."
The Post Office said the new site would provide a modern, open-plan style branch with three serving positions.
One would be screened, one open-plan and the other would be an open-plan serving point at the retail counter where many Post Office services would be available throughout shop opening hours when the other two are closed.
Should the move go ahead, the branch would open from 6am to 9pm, Monday to Saturday, and 7am to 9pm on Sunday, an extra 58 hours of service each week.
Adrian Wales, regional manager, said: "We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in Immingham and we are confident that this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future."
He added: "This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office and marks a commitment to no more branch closure programmes."
