TALENTED young musicians used their instruments and voices to lift the roof off Grimsby Town Hall.

The annual Bradley Youth Festival got into full swing over the weekend, with hundreds of performers competing in classes designed to showcase their skills.

The aim of the festival is to advance, promote and encourage the study and practice of the arts of music, speech and drama.

This event is now in its 71st year but adjudicators admit they are still overwhelmed by the amount of sheer talent displayed.

Caroline Clemmow, an experienced adjudicator, marked the piano duet performances during Saturday afternoon.

She awarded a first place certificate to Freya Hadley and Sophie Read. The duo performed a piece entitled The Streets of Lorendo (with repeat).

Freya, 9, who attends Waltham Leas Academy, said: "I find playing the piano very peaceful, which is why I enjoy doing it so much.

"I have been learning for around two years now and I love coming to festivals to show off my talent."

Sophie, 9, who attends the same school, is proud to have been award the top mark in her category.

She said: "I enjoy playing solo, but even more so when I'm playing with Freya as a duet. I like people watching me and enjoying my music."

Freya's mum Cathryn Hadley, 44, is very proud of her daughter and her friend's achievement.

She said: "I am a music teacher and although Freya has private lessons elsewhere, I am pleased she shares my passion.

"I think you can learn skills through music that are vital for everyday life, such as listening and working with others."

Meanwhile Ellen Firth, 8, of Market Rasen, sang for the first time at the festival.

She impressed the judges so much that the debut performer scooped second place in her category.

After reciting The Hermit by Havelock Nelson, she said: "I was really scared at the beginning but now I feel proud to have done it.

"I enjoyed it and I think I will come back and do it all again."

Her mum Lucy Firth, said: "I am really impressed with how well this festival is organised.

"We have never done something like this before and we think it is great.

"The judges gave some very constructive criticism, which I think gives the children some encouragement while also teaching them ways to improve.

"I use to sing when I was young so it is nice to see Ellen enjoying it, too."

After hearing some of the children's work, adjudicator Caroline said: "The Bradley Youth Festival is a wonderful event.

"There has been a variety of extraordinary talent throughout the weekend, which is lovely to see in people so young."
