Grimsby Town boss hoping to end search for new striker

GRIMSBY Town manager Paul Hurst has hinted that he may finally be closing in on a new striker.

The Mariners boss has added four new faces to his squad this summer, but the search for a frontman has so far proved fruitless.

Former loanee Connor Jennings opted to join Conference rivals Wrexham instead, while Town have been unable to agree a fee with Solihull Moors for Omar Bogle.

But, speaking ahead of this evening's friendly at Matlock Town (7.15pm), Hurst admitted he has another iron in the fire.

"I'm waiting on a phone-call – we'll see whether that's positive news or not," he told the Telegraph.

"That's a conversation with an attacking player. As I've said before, there don't seem to be too many out there.

"I certainly know there are a few who are on trial elsewhere that could become options."

The Town boss continues to keep his cards close to his chest regarding the identity of his target, however.

"I'm not particularly looking at league players or players further down the divisions," he added.

"I'm not going to rule anything out if I feel it's right for us.

"So he might be 19 or 20 and have that potential to kick on, or it might be an experienced one, who for whatever reason is just coming down the football chain.

"I'm not against anything – I just want someone who I feel can do a good job for us, add competition for Ross (Hannah) and Lenny (John-Lewis), and obviously someone who can get some goals."

And Hurst insists that he will wait as long as it takes to get the right man in – even if that means the season has begun.

He remarked: "The biggest thing for me is not to dive in if I don't think it's right, and not get a player just for the sake of it.

"Just before the season starts, or just into it, a gem could appear or become available for loan who may improve us.

"If I've spent the money bringing someone in who I wasn't sure about I'd kick myself.

"So while I've said many times it would be nice to get them in as soon as possible, I won't rush into signing someone I'm not convinced about."
