A SPECIAL memorial plaque has been unveiled to mark the 70th anniversary of 550 Squadron starting its operations from North Killingholme - and the bravery of its pilots. A poignant ceremony took place at the firing range premises of Killingholme Full Bore Club - with the special guest a distinguished 93-year-old former pilot. Wing Commander Jack Harris served at North Killingholme during a spell starting in September 1944 and spent nearly six months with the squadron. He said he was very proud to unveil the plaque. It was his first visit to the Killingholme range, on part of the former airfield site, but he praised its importance in keeping alive the memory of former servicemen. A Lancaster bomber flew past as part of the ceremony for the unveiling of the plaque. Keep an eye out for full coverage of the occasion in the Grimsby Telegraph.
