Aviation enthusiasts will get a chance to see KLM's iconic DC3 aircraft at Humberside Airport on Friday. The Dutch carrier's vintage Dakota DC3 is currently on a tour of the UK as part of the airline's 95th anniversary celebrations. It will stop at Newcastle today (Wednesday), Durham Tees Valley on Thursday, Humberside on Friday and Norwich on Saturday before returning to Amsterdam. The DC3 was the first successful commercial aircraft and, this week, a select group of passengers will get to experience the style and luxury experienced by flyers during the golden age of travel. Built in 1944, the aircraft used in this tour, The Royal KLM Dakota PH-PBA, was in service with the 8th Air Force during the Second World War and later became the official aircraft of the Dutch government after being acquired by his Royal Highness Prince Bernhard, Prince of the Netherlands. It was retired in 1975 and was part of the collection of the Aviodrome museum until it was put back into service in 1998. In 2010, the aircraft was given its current KLM colours and was christened 'Princess Amalia' after the current heiress to the Dutch throne. Warner Rootleip, general manager UK & Ireland at Air France KLM said: "Our regional bases are incredibly important to KLM and it is fantastic to be able to showcase our heritage to the local community." The DC3's journey can be followed on Twitter at @KLM_UK
