THE mix of road and muddy trails proved a winning combination for runners taking part in the Cleethorpes AC Multi-Terrain race.

Starting and finishing in Thorpe Park and featuring a moderately muddy off-road section, the 4.3-mile race was good test of strength and speed.

Similar to the Wolds Veteran Runners Club's Denis Lake Memorial Race the previous week, the event was more low-key and smaller than some, but the battles were just as keenly fought out.

Weather conditions were ideal, cool and calm, with little wind.

First across the line in 24 minutes, 59 seconds was the host club's Kevin Green, who rounded off a good year.

Second was club-mate Trevor Green in 25.29, beating Scott Indian (25.32) in a sprint finish.

Fellow blue and golds James Woodhouse and Ed Huxford rounded off the first five.

First female was Clee AC's Lisa Foster, with 30.14. Mandy Aisthorpe and Pirjo Kivelainen were second and third in 31.14 and 31.22 respectively. There were 41 finishers.

The previous week, runners toed the start line for the Denis Lake Memorial Race, run on a course from Barnoldby-le-Beck.

Wolds Vets Andy Pegg and Ian Martinson crossed the line together in 28.49.

Bob Stocks (Wolds, 29.27), Paul Evison (Clee, 29.35) and Andy Garside (Wolds, 29.55) completed the top five.

Next across the line was first female Rachel Lake in 29.56. Ann Knoyle and Mandy Aisthorpe completed the first three. There were 32 finishers.

The Scunthorpe Open Cross Country event scheduled for yesterday was cancelled due to a fire at the Quibell Park Stadium.
