VILLAGERS are calling for the speed limit to be reduced on a "dangerous" and "busy" stretch of road.
North East Lincolnshire Council is considering a request by Bradley Parish Council to cut the limit in Bradley Road between Bradley Crossroads and south of the junction with Church Lane from 40 to 30mph.
The parish council also wants to see the introduction of a 40mph "buffer zone" stretching to the south of the double bends at Bradley and Dixon Woods. The limit there is currently 60mph.
Parish council chairman Val Turner said that the speed of traffic in Bradley Road had been an issue for several years, and that the popularity of the Bradley Football Development Centre had heightened concerns.
She said: "If you are going from Bradley roundabout to Waltham there are several stretches of very straight road and the speeds along there and the overtaking are ridiculous.
"We now have the new football stadium so there's more traffic coming out on to Bradley Road.
"People come from the roundabout at Bradley Crossroads and put their foot down and start to overtake, and there are cars waiting to come out of the football stadium.
"There's also the nursing home further down and the double bends that are notorious. All in all it's really quite a dangerous road. In the morning a lot of the traffic comes from Waltham and that side of town. It's a very busy piece of road."
The matter has been referred to NELC's portfolio holder for environment and housing Ray Oxby and was discussed at a meeting of the regeneration, housing and environment and scrutiny panel.
Although most councillors were in favour of the 30mph limit, some did not agreed with the 40mph zone.
Councillor Philip Jackson (Con, Waltham) said: "What I would like to see are some collision statistics why we need to do that.
"I'm not aware there is a particular collision hazard around that stretch of road."
Councillor Terry Thurogood (Lab, Croft Baker) said: "It does seem that 30mph is appropriate as far as Bradley village is concerned.
"The Bradley Pitches centre is in daily use, there is traffic entering that section of Bradley Road so I think a 30mph limit would seem to be appropriate, but it is difficult to see the justification for expanding it without seeing any accident statistics, but I have every confidence in the portfolio holder."
