Debate over Peaks Parkway speed cameras goes on as more motorists receive tickets

WOULD you call for the removal of speed cameras on Grimsby's Peaks Parkway?

So far, 1,408 members of the public have signed a petition calling on North East Lincolnshire Council to get rid of the average speed cameras and increase the speed limit to 40mph.

The Grimsby Telegraph's own petition to gauge support for the 30mph to be retained has attracted 63 signatures.

Since the cameras were switched on at the start of October, the Grimsby Telegraph has been inundated with irate motorists who have been caught speeding on the 30mph stretch – many multiple times, with more being received every day. One motorist received seven tickets in nine days for breaking the 30mph limit while an 86-year-old man, who had never received a speeding ticket in 65 years of driving, was also clocked.

Fears have also been raised that many motorists are voting with their feet; by avoiding the Parkway completely, therefore causing tailbacks and "rat runs" on other roads, including Scartho Road.

The issue continues to cause debate among Telegraph readers online at www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk.

Leighton770 asked: "Why not make it a roundabout instead of traffic lights, then there won't be a rush of speeding to get through before the lights change to red?"

Nutnut1950 commented: "If people cannot drive at 30mph for such a short distance, are these the same people who flout the 20mph near schools?"

And ChartaNuga suggested: "Wouldn't it be fairer to just raise 50p from the whole of the population rather than raising extortionate sums from the relatively fewer caught-out motorists?"

Last week, Cleethorpes MP Martin Vickers said the use of speed cameras on the Parkway is "unreasonable".

He said: "I would have thought there are many more dangerous sections of road within the borough that should have cameras.

"If you are going out of town, once you have passed the lights at B&Q it should be 40mph and once you pass Weelsby Road it should be staged or very quickly go to 60mph."
