Grimsby Town boss may need to add to squad if Chris Doig's injury woes continue

PAUL Hurst doesn't expect to bring in any reinforcements in the coming weeks – but Chris Doig's ongoing injury could force his hand.

With the loan window set to close later this month, the Grimsby Town boss insists he is happy with the squad currently at his disposal.

But he does admit that if Chris Doig's injury woes continue, he may be forced to dip into the market to bolster his otherwise threadbare backline.

Doig is not expected to play in this afternoon's clash at Tamworth (3pm) as he continues to struggle with a calf injury.

That leaves Shaun Pearson and Clayton McDonald as Town's only recognised senior centre-halves – both of whom are set to start in Staffordshire today.

And Hurst admits the current situation could start to give him cause for concern – if the Scot's condition doesn't improve soon.

"I certainly need to monitor the situation surrounding Chris," he told the Telegraph.

"On Saturday when he was warming up, he was fine but then all of a sudden he felt it.

"He then went home and went out for something to eat and was almost struggling to walk. But then he got up the next day and it felt a lot better, so it's a strange one.

"If we went inside the leg and had a look, it probably wouldn't show that much damage, so it's probably more a nerve that's causing him some issues.

"We've only got two centre-halves fit at the minute – and if it was to turn around that Chris' injury was to keep him out for longer, then bringing someone in might be something I have to look at.

"It's a difficult one because if you bring someone in then they expect to be playing and the two that are in there at minute have done well and I wouldn't want to change that currently.

"But as we move closer to the window shutting, if Chris isn't back fit, then it's something I'll have to look at – we might have to do something.

"If I feel we need to bring someone in then the possibility is there for it to happen."
