There's plenty of chances for you to get involved in the Tidy Up Together campaign. Richard York reports...

FROM crisp packets to cigarette ends, teams of volunteers came together to help tidy up one of Grimby's parks.

More than 140kg of litter was removed from Weelsby Woods, in an initiative organised by Councillor Hazel Chase, local Asda staff and volunteers from Aspire.

The clean-up, part of the recently-launched Tidy Up Together campaign, began as an idea from Claire Tilby, the community life champion for Asda Grimsby.

She said: "We just want to help make the area a better place by doing what we can to help in the community."

Hayley Brooks is from Aspire, which helps people recovering from alcohol and drug problems, and is currently being supported by Asda.

"When people have these kinds of problems they can become very isolated," explained Hayley.

"Getting out here to do something like this helps them get back into society.

"It also breaks down stereotypes. People assume that if you have a drug or drink problem, then you are a bad person.

"But the people involved in the tidy-up just want to put something back into the community."

As reported, Tidy Up Together has seen the Grimsby Telegraph and North East Lincolnshire Council join together to tackle problem areas.

The council is investing £150,000 in a borough-wide six-month blitz to tackle the worst grot spots.

But they need your help to identify those areas.

Whether the problem is dog fouling, fly tipping or an area simply in need of a good scrub, we need you to tell us.

The campaign began in Humberston and New Waltham on Monday.

The clean teams are making their way around the wards, dusting the Wolds and scrubbing Immingham before heading in to de-grime Grimsby and de-clutter Cleethorpes.

Your Grimsby Telegraph will report on the locations of the clean ups as they are completed.

Rod Dean, parks and cleansing manager for the council, said: "Every little helps – we have 38 parks and recreation areas that we must maintain.

"Weelsby Woods alone covers about 87 acres. Having the support of volunteers like this helps us get to the areas that we often are not able to.

"Their help is much appreciated and we will assist them and anybody else who wishes to help."
