PARENTS have welcomed the free school meals that will become available to all infants as of next September.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg announced the policy last night which will give all 4-7-year-olds a free hot lunch, saving parents around £400 a year.
The policy has convinced Dave Thompson, 41, to switch his daughter Libby, 5, who goes to Middlethorpe Primary School from a pack-up to hot meals.
Mr Thompson, of Clee Road, said: "They have packed lunches at the moment because we can choose what they eat and school dinners for two kids ends up costing about £80 a month.
"This is a good idea and if it comes off, I'll definitely switch Libby to school dinners. I'm not sure what we'll do with my Libby because she's eight and will miss out on it."
James Leary, 38, of Middlethorpe Road, has a four-and-a-half-year-old, Chloe, also at Middlethorpe.
He said: "The £40 a month I will save will definitely make a big difference. There's always something else to spend money on when you've got a daughter.
"It's good for kids to have a hot meal, especially at this kind of year, but there's a social side too.
"Chloe has a few friends who she sits with at lunch time and they enjoy eating dinner together."
