Following the release of his new autobiography, John McDermott logged on for a live Grimsby Telegraph web chat to answer questions from fans about his fantastic career. Some of his responses are below and the full discussion can be replayed by clicking on the Cover It Live console.

Q Hi Macca, hope you are well. Who was the biggest joker in the dressing room over the years? I hear Gallimore was a bit of a lad... MarinerBob

A Tough one that, but I'd have to say the lad who was the biggest joker was Mark Lever. Gally would come out with the odd joke every now and again but Mark was at it every day. If Mark made a mistake in training, he would be the only one who would get away with it because Alan Buckley was always too busy laughing with him because of his demeanour.

QWhat do you think of Town's chances of getting out of the Conference this year? Townfan123

A It will be tough, but they've got off to a decent start. They've made a lot of signings who will take time to jell but they're getting some good results in the meantime. When it does come together, I fancy them. A lot of teams will fear them on reputation alone. Because they've got a good, vocal backing, they'll be up there, those teams with a big fan-base always are.

QWhat are your views on the FA Trophy having an effect on teams that are pushing for promotion? A similar situation to what happened to us last season, did all those extra games cost us the league? GTFC fan

A No I don't think so. When we went up, we played 70-odd games and winning becomes a habit. For the teams who fall short, it's too easy to blame the cup run. No-one blames the winning run while they're getting to finals, it's if they lose it that they can point to it afterwards.

QDid you ever come close to leaving Town? Were there any offers from other teams? Stevie

A There was interest from a few clubs and I had two offers to leave during my whole career – one of which I was going to take towards the later stages when I was 35, as I thought that my service with Town justified it.

Q Hi Macca, what was your favourite moment as a Town player? Simon

A There's my appearances at Wembley obviously because back then, it was the first time that the club had ever gone there. But there's also my debut, which was a very proud moment for me. In fact, there's lots of occasions but I'd have to say Exeter in '89 just because of the huge crowd that we had inside Blundell Park that day – those were the good old days.

Q What does the future hold for you? Are you content at the moment or are you still very determined to manage a team like Grimsby? Town Fan

A I'm ambitious and I want to make my way in the game as a manager. I want to manage in the League and it would be nice if that was with a club like Grimsby one day – as they've got a good fanbase. I'm not one of those who settles for what he's got, I always want to push myself and learn more. But I'm enjoying my time working at the Institute because I'm learning stuff all the time. Football has gone academic these days – it's not all about coaching on the grass – and it's been good to be part of that.

QWho was the fittest team-mate you played alongside? Town Fan B

A The fittest? When he was younger, I'd have to say Gary Croft. Tony Gallimore was also a very fit lad believe it or not! Livvo was also quite a fit lad. In my younger days, I'd have to throw my name into the mix as well!

QWhy do you think you have been overlooked for the manager's job at Town in the past?... Guest

A Presumably because they thought that there was someone better for the job. My best advice would be to read the book – the full story is all in there!

QWho do you think is the best player you played with that should of gone onto play at a much higher level? Paul

A Dave Gilbert. He was skilful, he never rarely lost the ball, he shielded it well, had a good delivery and chipped in with goals. Diddy maybe just lacked that extra yard of pace and that's perhaps what stopped him from playing at the highest level.

QWho was Town's biggest boozer? Guest

A In celebration, all of us! But we only did it when we deserved it or when we were allowed it.

Q Do you have any tips for an aspiring footballer? Councillor Matthew Barrow

A Always believe in yourself. Work hard, never give up and you'll get your rewards.
