Racehorse aiming to break his duck

IF at first you don't succeed, then try, try again – that could be the motto for Lincolnshire racehorse Ifonlyalfie.

He is entered to race in the RAFBF Midshires Powerchairs Handicap Chase at Market Rasen Racecourse's annual Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund family fun day on Sunday.

On the last four occasions that the eight-year-old horse – trained in the county by Chris Bealby – has run at Lincolnshire's only racecourse, he has finished runner-up.

On Sunday, could he be ready to go one better at the fifth time of asking and get his head in front?

He could face opposition in the 3.25pm race from Market Rasen-trained Peak Seasons, a horse from the stables of Michael Chapman.

If he runs, the ten-year-old will be making his 142nd start.

But he has yet to record a win at Market Rasen.

Grimsby Town FC director Chapman has also entered Galley Slave in the RAFBF Per Ardua Ad Astra Handicap Hurdle at 5.05pm. He's twice been a winner at his local track.

Trainers make their decisions tomorrow about which horses run.

Racing is between 2.20pm and 5.35pm, with gates open two hours before the first race.

There is free face painting, temporary tattooing, balloon modelling and bouncy castle for the children.

All serving RAF personnel can have two free Tattersalls tickets – all they need do is bring their official identification on the day.

Visitors can meet the Benevolent Fund's mascot Ben Elephant – and there will be air displays from a Spitfire and Messerschmitt Bf 109.

On-the-day prices: Family Enclosure £7.50; Tattersalls £14; County Enclosure £19. Students and senior citizens save up to £4 off admission. Call 0844 579 3009 to book general admission – advance purchase qualifies for a ten per cent discount. Accompanied under-18s are admitted free of charge.
