RYUICHI Kiyonari suffered despair in his quest for a record-equalling fifth Suzuka Eight Hour race success.

The Japanese ace, who rides for Louth-based Samsung Honda in the British Superbike Championship, crashed out of the gruelling contest in the third hour.

Having teamed up with World Superbike star Jonathan Rea for FCC TSR Honda, the team were leading the way.

And, although 'Kiyo' walked away unhurt, the damage to his machine was deemed too severe to continue.

The three-time BSB champ, right, began the race and was in second place at the first re-fuelling stop where Rea took over at the controls.

Ninety minutes in, and the team were heading the pack, but at the beginning of the third hour, with Kiyonari back on board, the 30-year-old crashed, putting the team out of the race.

A British rider tasted success, as Rea's Pata Honda WSB team mate Leon Haslam surged to victory, riding alongside Japanese and Dutch riders for Musashi Honda.

Second place in the race, a lap down, was the Yoshimura Suzuki team which included Tyco Suzuki BSB rider Josh Brookes.

On the road racing scene, Kirmington's Guy Martin continued his build-up to this month's Ulster Grand Prix with a fine display at the Armoy Road Races in Northern Ireland.

The Tyco Suzuki star took podium finishes in both the Open Superbike and Supersport classes.

He then finished fourth in the Race of Legends after over-shooting whilst disputing the lead.
