I WONDER if Rob Scott and Paul Hurst's ears pricked up when they heard of Wes York's transfer request.
The Nuneaton Town winger tore Grimsby Town – and Bradley Wood in particular – to shreds during his side's victory in Warwickshire some eight weeks ago.
With pace to burn, York was unapologetically direct from the off, running at an increasingly bamboozled Mariners defence.
Other than Southport's Shaun Whalley – who has just joined Luton – and Ebbsfleet United's Ashley Carew, I can't recall a more impressive wideman in action against the Mariners this season.
And while Whalley and Carew are 25 and 27 respectively, York is just 19 and desperate to become a full-time footballer.
The youngster, who also plays up front, enjoyed an impressive campaign for Kevin Wilkin's men, netting 13 times to help them fight off relegation.
Having only made the step up from the East Midlands Counties Football League in 2011, the former Anstey Nomads man obviously has his fair share of confidence too – as his request to leave Liberty Way shows.
"I've always wanted to be a professional footballer. It's a short career and I think full-time coaching would really help me," York said.
"Players of my kind with pace don't keep it forever so I want to add other areas to my game and improve all round. I think a move could help with that."
Sounds like a pretty sensible lad. And with joint boss Scott admitting that young, rough diamonds are on Town's radar – possibly due in part to the budget constraints – he sounds ideal.
Recognising their asset's potential, Nuneaton are prepared to listen to "sensible offers" for the winger.
"I've not heard about any interest other than word of mouth. It's a case of waiting to see what happens," he added.
"In my mind I've not jumped ship yet. I just keep my head down. I'm sure Nuneaton will take care of things if an offer comes in."
Elsewhere, wingers definitely not heading into Blundell Park include Whalley, who was linked with the Mariners last month but has since gone to Kenilworth Road.
Matty Blair was another to be linked with Town following his release by York City, but appears on the cusp of a move to Portsmouth.
Who would you like to see charging down the wings for the Mariners next season?
