A MAN and woman were being questioned by police following a raid on a home in Wellowgate, Grimsby – linked to the investigation into the mystery drug which put five people in hospital.
The 24-year-old man and 32-year-old woman were arrested at the scene following the operation yesterday morning, which saw a small amount of white powder recovered from the upstairs flat.
As reported, five people were rushed to Grimsby's Diana, Princess Of Wales Hospital, from a property on Wentworth Road, Grimsby, on Sunday, April 21, after taking a white powder – the origin and make-up of which remains a mystery.
The drug was so powerful at inducing extreme hallucinations, the patients had to be restrained as they were transported to hospital at about 4.30pm.
Police toxicologists are still working to establish what the powder contained.
Those effected were three men – aged 28, 31 and 33 – and two women, aged 23 and 24. They were also arrested and have been released on police bail.
Since the escalation in the consumption of so-called "legal highs", the Grimsby Telegraph has spearheaded a campaign to highlight the dangers of taking any drugs. As yet, it is not yet known if the drug, which caused such an extreme reaction among the drug takers, is one of those or is illegal.
And, although all five have now been discharged from hospital, police are keen to establish who supplied the substance – and identify what it is – as supplies could still be on North East Lincolnshire's streets.
A spokeswoman for Humberside Police said: "As investigations continue, the message from police remains the same.
"An investigation is underway to identify not only who is responsible for supplying the drug or drugs which put these five people in hospital, but to also try to identify exactly what had been taken."
She added officers were also still keen to speak to anyone else who was at Wentworth Road on the day of the incident, in the hope they may be able to help determine what the group had taken.
She said: "In a safety message police would like to remind people you can never be totally sure what is in either legal or illegal drugs.
"The only way to avoid falling foul of what can be potentially fatal side-effects is to simply not take drugs."
A Wellowgate resident, who did not wish to be named, claimed there had been ongoing incidents at the property for the past year.
He said: "When I saw all the police I feared the worst."
Anyone who can help the investigation, or has information relating to the supply of drugs in the area, should call Humberside Police on 101.
