MORE affordable housing is to be built in Grimsby thanks to a £3-million Government grant.

The next phase of development on Freshney Green will include 84 new homes – 80 houses and 4 bungalows.

Work on the Shoreline Housing scheme has already started, made possible due to the grant from Homes and Communities Agency (HCA).

The new builds will mainly comprise of rented accommodation, but 29 properties will be set aside for the social landlords' shared ownership scheme.

Developers Linden Homes have already built 440 homes on Freshney Green and are "delighted" to be beginning work on the next phase.

Out of the 84 extra homes planned for the site, 25 will have two bedrooms, 53 will be three-bedroomed and the remaining six will have five bedrooms.

However, Shoreline bosses have said if they were designing the site today, they would look at a different mix of property types in light of the government's welfare reform and introduction of the bedroom tax.

Tony Bramley, chief executive of Shoreline, said: "The design and approval of the site pre-dates government's introduction of the bedroom tax.

"We go back five years to 2008 when the development funding was agreed with North East Lincolnshire Council and the Homes and Communities Agency.

"There is, of course, still a big local demand for the size of properties that will be built in this next phase of Freshney Green, in what has become a very popular neighbourhood."

All homes will have uPVC double glazing, central heating and allocated parking and are being built to Eco Homes Standard.

Mr Bramley added: "The secured grant funding is fantastic news and really maximises the opportunity for the development of affordable housing in the area.

"Freshney Green is our flagship redevelopment and this marks another phase in its long-term transformation."

The additional funding takes HCA's total investment in Freshney Green to over £7 million.

Steve Woomble, Linden Homes sales director, said: "Acceleration of the next phase of the programme at Freshney Green is not only a demonstration of the successful long-standing partnership we have with Shoreline, but also offers many more home buyers the chance to move to a wonderful brand new home at a price they can afford."

People can visit the Freshney Green show home at 33 Silver Birch Place, from 11.30am tomorrow, to find out more.
