A CHARITABLE club is feeding those in need by backing the Grimsby Telegraph's Ten Tonnes Of Tins campaign.
Members of The Grimsby Rotary Club teamed together and brought in three boxes of tins to support the successful initiative, which began in February.
The current economic downturn has led to a huge increase in the number of struggling individuals and families turning to places such as the Daily Bread Food Larder at Christian Action Resource Enterprise (Care).
Martyn Turner, publicity officer for the club, said: "When I saw the campaign in the Telegraph, I thought it was well-worthy and something that our 60 members could support.
"While we were eating a lunch at a meeting I brought up the idea because it made me realise how fortunate we are compared to others. Economic times are very difficult at the moment and food is a basic necessity that anyone shouldn't be without. We always try to meet our code of "service above self".
"I was surprised at how well everyone supported the campaign. I thought people might bring in a couple of tins, but they brought in several.
"We went around a supermarket and got £20 worth of perishable basic foods; on top of what we already had donated.
"We gave tinned soup, meat, fruit, jam, rice and cereal – all the basic foods you need to have a proper meal."
Martyn, from Grimsby, has been a member of the club since 1989 and told how the organisation supports other worthy charities in need.
"Last year we had raised a lot of money for Linkage Trust, Flag and Doorstep," he continued.
"We also give out shelter boxes with essentials such as a tent, tools, clothing and food. We even saw our tents on television up in Iraq and Haiti – that felt really good."
The club is currently organising the annual Grimsby Dock Tower abseil in aid of the Sea Cadets and the CatZero youth employment programme.
Trips up the tower for walkers will take place on Saturday, July 6 and the abseil on Sunday, July 7. To get involved and to book a place, phone 01472 877766.
