"SOMETHING needs to be done before we have a serious accident or even a death on this street."
These were the words from Guildford Street resident John Harrison, who says that motorists flout the one-way system in the road – possibly because they are not even aware it's in place.
He fears there will be a collision on the junction with Oxford Street as a result.
Mr Harrison, 63, talked about the problem at an East Marsh Involve community meeting and Councillor Steve Beasant (Lib, East Marsh) has reported it to Balfour Beatty.
It is a street that was once in the UK's second most deprived area in a national study – but has undergone an extensive renovation scheme, with the first residents moving into new homes in August 2011.
However, Mr Harrison thinks that the one-way system which has since been imposed – running through chicanes created by giant metal planters – has not been observed by drivers.
He said: "I've seen normal motorists, delivery drivers and even an ambulance come down the street the wrong way.
"One of the problems is that people come down the right way, park, then turn around and drive out the wrong way.
"I drive my mobility scooter down there and have almost been hit a few times while looking in the direction that cars are supposed to be coming from, by cars coming from the opposite direction.
"They drive up to 40mph and unless something gets done, we will have a very serious accident – probably on the Oxford Street junction."
Mr Harrison believes that the signs at the entrance to the street should be bigger – but also hopes raising the problem in the Grimsby Telegraph will help make people aware of the one-way system.
However, traffic aside, Mr Harrison believes that the regeneration has had a positive impact on the area.
He added: "I've lived here for 35 years and have seen it go from a brilliant place to its lowest point, before the houses were rebuilt.
"It is not perfect yet, but I can honestly say that it is a lot better than it was."
The issue is currently being looked at by Balfour Beatty officers and Councillor Beasant is hoping to hear from them soon.
What do you think? Did you know Guildford Street had a one-way system? Do you live down a one-way street where there are similar problems?
