EAST met west at a recent multicultural celebration. Performers took part in an East West Academy of Culture Festival at Grimsby's Central Hall.

Academy president Dr William Murdoch, welcomed people to the event, now in its 12th year.

Dance, drama, poetry and music were used to unite different cultures.

Expressions, a western dance group directed by Penny Smith, and Nayana Whittaker, a performer of Indian classical and folk dance from Leicester, were among those on stage.

Action Louder Than Words, a drama group for people with learning disabilities directed by Heather Hasthorpe, wowed the audience. There was also a creative photography exhibition and magic show.

The academy aims to educate people about eastern and western traditions, using the festival as an opportunity to experience a mix of cultural traditions.

North East Lincolnshire Mayor, Councillor Mike Burton, accompanied Grimsby MP Austin Mitchell, who is a patron of the organisation.

And Dr Sisir Majumdar, a retired consultant psychiatrist from Humberston Avenue, Humberston, promoted his 10th book, Foreign Land, a narrative description of the history and culture of countries around the world, written in both Bengali and English.

He said: "We are a multicultural organisation and we promote not only Asian culture but try to expand cultures between the east and the west by sharing the arts, literature, music and dance.

"East West is a non-political and non-religious academy, we aim to celebrate the traditions of these two different cultures."

A blend of cultures was achieved by performers Sujit Mukherjee and Raj Gaikwad. Sujit sang Elvis Presley, while Raj belted out Bollywood hits!

The academy's new magazine, Home And Abroad, published in English and Bengali, was available and Dr Majumdar invited poets and writers to contribute to the next edition.

"The evening was a great success," he added.

"I highly encourage people to get involved with the performance next year, and the other events that East West co-ordinate."

The celebrations ended with an Indian buffet and a performance by Dr Majumdar on the keyboards.
