Lincolnshire grammar school funding fears

Gainsborough MP Sir Edward Leigh has spoken of his fears that Lincolnshire's grammar schools could be threatened by changes to funding.

Sir Edward thinks the selective state schools could be forced to offer fewer A Level subjects in future now funding is linked to pupil numbers.

Changes in policy mean school sixth forms and further education colleges are allocated money depending on how many students are enrolled rather than the number of subjects they offer.

Sir Edward said he feared this would affect schools with large numbers of academically gifted pupils - many of them grammars, which have a selective intake.

Council tax set to rise in East Lindsey

East Lindsey District Council is planning to increase its portion of the council tax bill charged to households by 1.95 per cent – just under 20p – per month for those living in a Band D property. The executive board approved the draft budget for the 2015-16 financial year. The county council, police and parish council elements will be added to the figure to get a final council tax bill. The local government finance settlement figures show that East Lindsey District Council's primary funding will be reduced by around £1.9m, which is 32 per cent. The council will have to make significant savings in its budget for 2015/16 in addition to the savings already made in recent years.

Do you remember Spot the Ball? The £250,000 jackpot hasn't been won in more than a decade after number who play the game falls to only 14,000

IN it's 70's heyday, Spot the Ball was played by more than 3 million a week, interest fell after the National Lottery was launched in 1994 now across the country just 14,000 people the game and the £250,000 jackpot hasn't been won since 2004.

To win, a player has to mark the exact position of a ball missing from a live-action football photograph

This has proved more difficult than it seems and the last person to pin the ball and win the jackpot was 69-year old Irene Robertson of South Yorkshire who received a tip from beyond the grave from her dead mother.

Irene Robertson of Conisbrough, South Yorkshire, said after winning that her mother Alice had told her at a seance: "Don't forget the coupon." just before she had planned to stop her £3 weekly flutter on the game after 40 years of playing.

A Football Pools spokesman told the Daily Mail: "Players of the Spot the Ball game have won £16million in prizes over the last ten years.

"The top prize is won by guessing the exact centre of the ball but this has not happened since 2004, reflecting the fact that fewer people play the game.

'However, the £16million has been paid out to weekly winners for other prizes on offer, including for being closest to the centre of the ball."

Injured Scott Neilson could be fit to face Barnet

MARINERS winger Scott Neilson is hopeful of being fit for Saturday's visit of Barnet.

The 27-year-old was injured against Macclesfield earlier this month, and was forced to sit out the Second Round draw on Saturday.

Aside from Aswad Thomas – who has been granted temporary leave from Blundell Park – Neilson, pictured, is the only injured player at the club.

And Hurst hopes he could return for Saturday's crunch TV encounter with Conference leaders Barnet.

Boss Paul Hurst said: "We're as we were really on the injury front.

"Scott is still not fit so he would have been unavailable to me tonight, but after that, we were okay.

"He tried training on Monday, but it was clear that he wasn't quite right. I don't think he's a million miles off, but he's definitely carrying a knock.

"He did some work in the gym with Dave Moore yesterday, so hopefully he's not too far away.

"The weekend is certainly a possibility for Scott, but we'll have to wait and see on that one."

Despite an injury concern of his own, Carl Magnay will feature against his former club, having made a welcome return to the team on Saturday.

Hurst added: "Carl has been training and has done well. There's always that bit of caution when you're coming back from an injury like that.

"He improved as the game went along on Saturday – he did a good job without being his eye-catching best."

Grimsby Town fans AND players can bring buzz back to Blundell Park

"IN football, sometimes things don't go to plan, but those are the times when people need to get fully behind each other and push everyone through."

That's the call to arms from assistant boss Chris Doig as Grimsby Town announced a host of offers and initiatives to try and bring the buzz back to Blundell Park.

Disappointing home results over the festive period has seen the atmosphere within the ground flatten and the club is eager to turn that around – with the fans' help.

Town have a potentially pivotal league clash with Barnet (12.45pm) on Saturday and club bosses want to reinvigorate the home support for that clash – and the rest of the season.

To that end, the club have once again teamed up with the Telegraph to give fans three fantastic deals.

Every fan who purchases a ticket for the Pontoon stand will receive a free GTFC flag, when presenting the voucher below (while stocks last).

Stadium bosses are allowing Pontoon supporters to bring them to the clash with the Bees and every remaining home clash of the campaign.

Not only that, after listening to requests, Town have decided to open up the Osmond Stand to families, and have launched a 'family ticket' for that stand in a bid to create more atmosphere behind the goal.

With the coupon below, two adults and two children can take their seats in the stand usually reserved for away fans – who will be housed towards the covered corner – for just £20.

Finally, junior fans (Under-15) who cut out the exclusive voucher below can get into Saturday's clash with the Conference leaders for FREE when accompanied by a paying adult.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Doig appreciates that, ultimately, it is the result and performance of the team that sets the tone, but insists the fans can still play a huge part in shaping their fortunes this season.

"We are fully aware and understand that fans have a right to voice their opinions, and make comments on what they see," he told the Telegraph.

"But there is nothing better for a home player when the home fans are right behind you in a game. It's no coincidence that when we get a big crowd and they are cheering us on, the lads respond to that.

"I look back at games from last season when we had a big crowd, particularly in the cup run.

"They were right behind us in those games and gave us that full support. We seemed to respond, and got positive results and performances from that.

"We were every bit as disappointed as the fans with some of the home results and I do understand the players have a responsibility to get the fans going with their performance and the results we achieve.

"But it can also work both ways and we really are going to need the fans from now until the end of the season.

He added: "Yes, Blundell Park can be an intimidating place for teams to come, but when things aren't going to plan, it can be uneasy for home players.

"I might get a little bit of criticism for saying that, but it's not only at Grimsby where that happens – and it is only a small minority.

"But I would be lying if I said I hadn't come to Blundell Park in the past as a player and the need to turn the home crowd hadn't been mentioned beforehand.

"We can't let that be a weapon for visiting teams this season.

"When the fans are there in numbers and are cheering for the lads, Blundell Park is a difficult place to play for the opposition.

"We have got a big game against Barnet to look forward to this weekend, and I'm sure it will be a top game with lots of fans there with the help of these offers.

"Hopefully, they will get right behind us and can give the lads that boost, and in turn, we hope to give them the performance they deserve."

GRIMSBY Town boss Paul Hurst hopes things will soon get better for Aswad Thomas.

As revealed yesterday on www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk/sport, the club have granted the full-back a period of leave for what boss Paul Hurst says are 'personal reasons'.

It means that the 25-year-old will be absent for Saturday's visit of Conference leaders Barnet.

Hurst is hopeful that the former Charlton graduate will be able to return to duty next week, vowing that the club will stand by him until 'things are better'.

"Aswad has been granted leave by the club for personal reasons," he explained. "And because it's due to personal reasons, I'm sure everyone understands that I don't really want to go too much into that.

"I think that we're probably looking at next week for his return and he knows that the club are here for him.

"He'll have some time away and hopefully when he comes back, things will be better."

Supermarket chain Sainsbury's to cut 500 jobs after suffering worst Christmas in ten years

Sainsbury's has confirmed it is cutting jobs after suffering its worst Christmas in ten years.

The supermarket chain has experienced a fall in profits during the past year, following similar announcements of disappointing performances by rivals Tesco and Morrisons.

It is unlikely any of the 500 positions to go will be in North East Lincolnshire, as they will affect staff based at store support offices in London, Manchester and Coventry.

Morrisons and Tesco will be closing loss-making branches across the UK and halting some new developments as they bid to get back on track, with the planned Sleaford Tesco one of those shelved.

Industry experts believe shoppers have begun to view the major chains as overpriced and instead switched their custom to continental brands Aldi and Lidl, as well as local independent retailers and markets.

Michael Gash to make debut at Grimsby Town after Barnet switch?

MICHAEL Gash could be lining up against Grimsby Town on Saturday after signing for Barnet following his release by Kidderminster.

The 28-year-old left the Harriers earlier this month following an 18-month spell in the Midlands and has now joined the Conference leaders on a deal until the end of the season.

Gash, who went on loan to Nuneaton Town earlier in the season, scored 24 goals in 70 appearances during his time at Aggborough.

His previous clubs included Cambridge United, Ebbsfleet, Braintree and York.

Bees boss Martin Allen told the club's official website: "I have watched him for a few years and now he has got four months with us.

"I explained to him that I needed cover for my two centre forwards. I told him straight what his position would be and he had to understand that and accept that."

Fears foxes being deliberately killed in Cleethorpes

THIRTEEN dead foxes have been discovered in Cleethorpes, including one with a hole in its shoulder – much to the shock of residents and walkers.

The foxes were found throughout Cleethorpes Country Park, residents said, leading to fears that they may have been killed deliberately.

A number were found in the Bedford Road area on the edge of the park

As previously reported, 13 dead foxes were found on Cleethorpes beach shortly before Christmas. The Beach Safety Team said it was believed the animals were killed by dogs.

Dog owners were told to keep their pets on leads "at all times".

But the fresh discovery included a fox with a hole in its shoulder. It was found near the gateway to the park, before residents called the council who took the dead animal away. The council said only one fox had been found, but residents insist there were more.

One Country Park resident said: "It's so upsetting when you come across them when you're out walking the dogs. It is sad to think what happened to them in their last moments.

"The last one we found had a hole in its shoulder and blood pouring out of its mouth.

"It's a shame that someone could do this to them.

"We don't see the animals as vermin around here – we even feed them every now and then. They help keep the rats and mice down and since we started finding them dead, the rats have really increased in our gardens."

Another resident added: "It's very upsetting. If you don't like them there's no need to poison or shoot them, just let them get on with their lives."

They added: "It's disgusting that someone could do this to an innocent animal. If they're doing it to foxes, who knows what they'll target next?

"We just want to warn animal owners of the dangers in the park to foxes and other animals. If it is poison, dogs or cats could also be affected by it so they should be mindful of that when walking their dogs or letting their cats out for the night."

A spokesman for NELC said: "We've only picked up one dead fox in the park so far and no other dead foxes have been reported to us."

Grimsby Town legend Dave Boylen: Let's bring back buzz of 'good old days'

GRIMSBY Town legend Dave Boylen has called for a return to the kind of Blundell Park atmosphere that he thrived on in his heyday.

Boylen, who starred for the Mariners between 1966 and 1978, has thrown his support behind the club's attempts to reinvigorate the home support.

As reported, GTFC have teamed up with the Grimsby Telegraph to extend THREE fantastic offers to fans for Saturday's clash with Barnet.

Every fan who purchases a ticket for the Pontoon stand will receive a free GTFC flag, when presenting the voucher below (while stocks last).

Stadium bosses are allowing Pontoon supporters to bring them to the clash with the Bees and every remaining home clash of the campaign.

Not only that, after listening to fans' requests, Town have decided to open up the Osmond Stand to families, and have launched a 'family ticket' for that stand in a bid to create more atmosphere behind the goal.

Finally, junior fans (under-15) who cut out the exclusive voucher below can get into Saturday's clash with the Conference leaders for FREE when accompanied by a paying adult.

Boylen, who made over 400 appearances for the Mariners, said he hopes fans take advantage of the offers and recreate the fabled Blundell Park atmosphere of the 'good old days'.

He told the Telegraph: "I'd love to see us get back to the days when every club that came to play at Blundell Park were very much in awe of the backing that Town got from their loyal supporters.

"This Saturday's home game against Barnet is an opportunity when we, as devoted supporters, can fully get behind the players out on the pitch.

"This is the kind of game that, when I was a player at least, I thrived on.

"The challenge of taking on the team at the top of the league is one that I'm sure all the players will be relishing, but they need your support.

"When he was here, Lawrie McMeneny used to go and shake the rival manager's hand before the game and say: "Our crowd will beat you today – never mind about the players out on the pitch" before just walking away.

"Those are the kind of atmospheres that we need to get back to."

He continued: "In support of the current crop of Town players, I have to say we are not out of the race to get promotion from this dreaded league.

"Yes, we have had two bad home results against Lincoln and Macclesfield, but we are still in with a good chance of getting promoted – players have got to realise where the target is.

"I do believe we have got a good chance of getting out of this league this season and one of our biggest assets at Town is the support we can generate inside Blundell Park.

"So let's get behind the lads against Barnet and help them with every kick of the ball.

"In my opinion, our supporters are the best in this league – so let's show it again this weekend."

Bodyguard to Nicole Kidman & other Hollywood stars now running Louth play barn

$

SPECIAL forces serviceman Matthew Robbens has given up life as a bodyguard to Hollywood stars such as Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt for family life and soft play.

The "big softie" was part of the famous "Brad and Ange" family for five years.

But most of his time now is dedicated to his family and providing a secure and fun Play Factory in Louth.

It opened last year to provide a much-needed soft play centre for families. It has also given him more time at home with his baby son Elijah and older son Ryan, rather than globetrotting with the stars.

He says the Play Factory has also turned him into "a big softie" after more than 20 years as a serviceman, including regular tours in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The bodyguard has headed the protection of the Jolie-Pitts and their brood, Russell Crowe and his children and Nicole Kidman.

He has also regularly been a security guard for Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer, some of The Jackson brothers and Daniel Day-Lewis.

As head of the security for "Brad and Ange", Matthew was also responsible for their six children.

His exciting career has seen him work as a security guard in places such as The Ivy Restaurant in London and the haunts of the rich and famous in Moscow.

Being on the shoulder of the film industry's A-list celebrities, he has been a helpful adviser when it came to military expertise.

He advised Angelina as director of The Land Of Blood And Honey and Brad when he was in World War Z.

Matthew's training in demolition, signals radio contact with fighter jets and medical training have all come in useful.

He was also able to tell the actors how to act like a proper sniper with controlled breathing, avoid blinking and a smooth pull of the trigger, rather than snatching.

He appeared in the credits for movie, The Tourist featuring Angelina Jolie.

Few servicemen can say they have as much close protection experience as Matthew.

Among those in his charge was General Andrew Figgures, Deputy Chief of the Defence Staff (Equipment Capability).

While on leave, through his contacts in the military, Matthew was introduced to security specialists who provided work in between his missions with the Forces.

In 2008 he went full-time in the security industry.

It began a five-year relationship with Brad and Angelina.

He recalled them taking their children to Legoland in 2013. That was followed by more work in Cannes for the international film festival and then there was a tour in Australia.

Matthew, 46, said: "I have worked all over the world, from Asia, Cambodia and Japan to Vietnam, China and Australia."

As well as the personnel involved, Matthew was also responsible for their belongings.

He said: "With Nicole (Kidman) I travelled to India with her best friend L'Wren Scott, who tragically died last year. She was a lovely lady. It is a great shame.

"When we were in India, L'Wren had a high-value box of jewellery and I had to ensure its security as well."

It was a far cry from his upbringing in lovely Louth with brother Andrew and his parents Peter and Janet, who live at South Cockerington.

After leaving school, Matthew joined the 4 Paratroop Regiment in the Territorial Army.

From there he underwent gruelling selection for the special forces.

He survived several tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Tragically he lost around 30 of his comrades during the wars.

He was stationed in Camp Victory in Iraq when former dictator Saddam Hussein was captured and held at the camp on the outskirts of Baghdad in 2003.

Matthew treasurers a photo of him sitting in the dictator's throne.

But he is hurt at the toll the conflict took on the lives of his comrades.

After leaving the forces he joined "Team Brad and Ange" which was a team of four bodyguards and after a while he became Number One.

The four-man security was responsible for ensuring the safety of the A-list actors and their six children.

Matthew had to preside over the care given by nannies and the family's drivers.

As a Hollywood couple, their main home is in Los Angeles. But they also have properties elsewhere in the world.

Matthew had to fly ahead of their next destination to negotiate landings and access to private suites in airports or changeovers on more remote areas of airports.

That was mainly to avoid the chaos of members of the public spotting the family and demanding photos or autographs.

Most of the immigration clearance could be done smoothly and discreetly away from the gaze of fans and members of the press.

Matthew said: "None of them likes to have a pack of photographers on their backs.

"The paramount importance is the security of the individual and their family and more often it was concern for the children which took most of the effort.

"That's because you get crazy people sometimes trying to gatecrash film sets. The most intense times are on the red carpet because each of the stars has to arrive right on time and they have a limited time to have their photographs taken before the next one arrives. It has to be slick.

"There was one famous incident when someone ran on to the carpet and started firing a gun. They were blanks but it was scary. Quite often you get people rushing through simply because they want to be on the TV. Others have used sprays on the faces of the celebrities. That's why many of them wear glasses. I always carry a bottle of water in case I am hit by spray."

Matthew said one of the constant problems are the paparazzi getting snatch photos of celebrities.

He told how they often have to leave restaurants by going through the kitchens to a rear door to avoid the photographers.

Although he described most as unscrupulous in their quest for the best shot, he built up an understanding with some to ensure his clients got some privacy.

While in Venice, Brad and Ange were given some space thanks to Matthew's arrangement with the "paps".

He said: "We sometimes had a good rapport because the journalists have families themselves. But others had no scruples and would put the photos of the kids straight up on the internet."

Disillusionment with the role and the intensity of the job and his regret of missing his family at home, made Matthew think about his own future.

In January last year his partner gave birth to their baby boy Elijah.

It gave the proud father a new lease of life and he thought how he could spend more time with his family.

He said: "I was fed up and not happy with the work. I liked working with Brad and Ange and with Nicole and Russell.

"But things were not going well with work. Relationships were breaking down and I thought I could be at home more and be with the children. I had missed so much of Ryan growing up and did not want to miss Elijah growing up."

With his role in looking after the children of celebrities and taking them to play centres in whatever location the family was in, Matthew saw an opportunity.

He remembered Louth did not have an adequately sized play centre. Parents and carers in the Louth area were forced to travel to bigger towns like Grimsby and Lincoln and Skegness to find large play centres.

So Matthew set about designing his own "Play Factory".

He had help from local developer Jim Waumsley.

Matthew said: "He was really good and helped me a lot."

He told how his skills in the security services trying to design out any hidden corners or "dark spots" came to the fore in designing the Play Factory.

Matthew said: "To me a dark area was where there was the potential for there to be a photographer, a nutter or a kidnapper.

"Wherever you are, you can see the children and the fire escapes. That is how I wanted it set up because of my background and that's why people say they like it. Safety is most important and it all goes hand in hand."

Parents can relax in the comfort of being able to see their children at all times, thanks to the layout of the play equipment.

Matthew said he had mixed feelings over his new role and still nurtures a vision to become a military adviser to film producers.

He said: "It is great because I get to see my boy every day. The family like it having me around."

He received an e-mail from Brad and Ange when his son was born last year.

Matthew said: "I have been to some wonderful places and met some fantastic people.

"I even chatted to Robert De Niro in a bar when he was waiting to speak to Brad.

"I went with one of the female stars when she was invited to The Vatican to meet the previous Pope (Pope Benedict) and we saw some amazing sights of the city and the vaults.

"We were shown on to The Pope's private balcony, which is usually only reserved for kings and queens because of the magnificent view of the city."

Matthew was presented with a watch by Russell Crowe, which the actor had chosen himself with black frame and silver dials to match Matthew's hair colour.

It was a thank you to his team for their service.

Another of the team got a gold watch to reflect his brash colourful character, and another got a watch with large numbers to improve his understanding of time.

After six months in business, Matthew said the play centre was proving popular at weekends and in school holidays and with families having birthday parties and celebrations.

He hopes to boost the weekday attendances.

He continues to do keep fit and runs each day and enjoys his motorcycles.

He often takes his son Ryan climbing.

Matthew said: "Having the play centre was really strange compared to what I was doing before and the military background and here I was looking after kids. It's a bit like the film Kindergarten Cop. It is therapeutic. It was forcing me to change my personality.

"To go from all the experiences in the military to being all soft and cuddly has been quite nice."

But the scars of war remain with Matthew.

On one tour of duty at Lashkar Gah, one of the three-vehicle convoy Matthew was with was hit by an improvised explosive device killing four of his comrades.

Matthew's eldest son Ryan is named after a comrade, Leo Ryan, 36, who was killed in 2004.

To all his comrades who made the ultimate sacrifice, he regularly pays his tributes and meets fellow servicemen on The Brecon Beacons where plaques have been laid.

AN EX-SAS officer and bodyguard to A-list stars including Russell Crowe and Brad and Angelina has started a new career – as the owner of a kids' play barn in the Grimsby area.

Matthew Robbens has given up a fast-paced glitzy life of global travel and red carpets guarding the lives of the rich and famous to come back to his roots and his family and open up a soft play centre.

The £150,000 investment has created six jobs at The Play Factory – which has been specially designed to make sure your little one is just as safe in his hands as the Jolie-Pitt children were. Matthew spent five years as a trusted member of Brad and Angelina's security team, rising through the ranks to their number one.

He accompanied them across the globe and even received an e-mail of congratulations on the birth of his youngest son last year. Matthew has also looked after Nicole Kidman, tragic L'Wren Scott, Johnny Depp, Michelle Pfeiffer and Daniel Day-Lewis to name just a few, and used his military expertise to teach the world's top actors how to make their roles as snipers and servicemen and women appear more realistic.

They were skills he learnt during a 20-year career in the Armed Forces – including the Special Forces – where he fought in some of the world's most dangerous war zones – including during the capture and detainment of former dictator Saddam Hussein on the outskirts of Baghdad in 2003.

Grimsby Town hunt new attacker 'to excite the fans'

LAST night's postponement at Gateshead gave Grimsby Town boss Paul Hurst more opportunity to widen his search for a new player that will 'excite the fans'.

The Mariners' scheduled FA Trophy Second Round replay was called off yesterday following a lunchtime pitch inspection at a wintry International Stadium.

The tie has been rearranged for Monday evening (7.45pm), with focus now shifting to Saturday's Conference clash with leaders Barnet – and the ongoing search for reinforcements.

Following the loan capture of Ollie Palmer from Mansfield, Hurst says he's happy with his lot in the striking department, but still wants to find someone who can 'make a difference' at the business end of the pitch.

"I want to add quality – it's as simple as that," he said.

"I've had a look at the squad and I think we would benefit from having another player who can excite the fans and go past people.

"Ollie Palmer has come in and so I think we're okay on the striking front for now – in saying that, if the right player becomes available, then of course you look at it.

"But we're looking at other areas and it might be a winger or an attacking midfielder – we'll have to see. We want someone who we feel could make a difference at the top end of the pitch – that doesn't necessarily have to be a striker – there's more ways to skin a cat after all."

As well as looking at incomings, Hurst revealed that he's had 'one or two' enquiries from other clubs for his players, but insists that nothing is imminent.

He continued: "Conversations are still taking place away from the training ground and we'll have to wait and see how they progress, but at this moment in time, there's nothing to report.

"We've had one or two tentative enquiries come in for our players – I'm not going to say who, but there haven't yet been any enquiries for Hamish Watson, for example, who we'd like to get a loan.

"Transfers are not straightforward, but talks are ongoing and when something is agreed, we will let everyone know."

BP will today announce 300 job cuts in North Sea operations, it has been revealed.

The British oil company employs nearly 4,000 people in the North Sea, with a further 11,000 elsewhere in the United Kingdom.

BP said in December that it will cut thousands of jobs cut across its global oil and gas business following steep falls in oil prices.

UK Energy Secretary Ed Davey told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that there must be no "panicked" response to short-term price fluctuations and insisted the government was "determined to do everything we can" to save jobs.

He added: "The oil and gas industry - in terms of corporate sectors - pays more tax than any other and therefore it's very important that we think about that both in terms of jobs and in terms of the overall tax take and the future health of the sector."
