Large quantities of class A and class B drugs have been seized after two separate police raids in Stanley Street this afternoon. Around 30 cannabis plants were found at the first property, which were thought to be worth around £8,000. At the second property, police recovered 15 cannabis plants, around 250 class A tablets thought to be ecstasy, and a small amount of amphetamine. A male, believed to be in his 20s, has also been arrested and is in police custody waiting to be interviewed. Two police teams carried out the raids at the same time, although the two incidents are not connected. Read Monday's Grimsby Telegraph for more on this story.

WW1 story of Grimsby Chums serialised in Grimsby Telegraph from tomorrow

THE 10th Battalion of the Lincolnshire Regiment – better known as The Grimsby Chums – were immortalised in a book by the Telegraph's columnist Peter Chapman.

From Monday, his definitive book will be serialised in the Grimsby Telegraph as our coverage to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of the the First World War.

The story of the Grimsby Chums was one of innocence and heroism, from their formation in August 1914 in answer to Kitchener's appeal for volunteers until their disbandment in May 1918.

We will publish the book, first published in 1991, chronicling Grimsby's heroes.

Peter, who writes the Odd Man's Week column in the Grimsby Telegraph, recalled how the idea of a history of The Chums had begun when he started his reporting career with the paper in 1958.

He attended many of the annual regimental dinners at The Yarborough Hotel, in Grimsby.

He said: "I knew a lot of them, as my parents did. Some of them would say it was a pity there had not been a battalion history written. The dinners stopped being held and gradually the survivors died off."

From his own research compiled over many years, Peter wrote the book of The Chums.

The Earl of Yarborough, whose grandfather had written the forward to The History of The Lincolnshire Regiment, provided the forward.

It was sold out and has not been republished until now.

Peter said: "The story I wrote was not a military history. It was a parochial history, so people could relate to them and not just remember them as men in khaki in trenches. They were all civilians, just like you and I."

An exact number of Chums has never been listed, but there were as many as 700 in a battalion during the First World War.

They suffered catastrophic losses on July 1, 1916, in the Battle of The Somme.

Peter said: "It broke everybody's heart. It was a disaster for The British Army."

Archive footage of The Chums came to light thanks to Peter's book.

A woman in Binbrook unearthed unknown film of The Chums from a shed, which is now in the Imperial War Museum, London.

The nickname for the soldiers came from a sub-editor working at the Grimsby Telegraph who coined the name after many other battalions throughout the country were named Pals. Grimsby, uniquely, called them The Chums.

Peter added: "As I wrote it I was satisfying a lot of ghosts to ensure their deeds were recorded."

A 23-year-old man is in a critical condition after suffering multiple injuries in Cleethorpes. Scene of Crime officers examined evidence at a block of flats following the incident this morning. It is currently unclear exactly what has happened but the focus of the investigation appears to be a third floor flat at St Joseph's Court, opposite the police station on Princes Road. It is understood a man has been taken to hospital - possibly after falling out of the third floor window onto the ground below, where there is evidence that somebody has suffered injuries and has been attended to by paramedics. Staff at the nearby Royal Court residential home said they heard a loud bang and raised voices coming from the area of the flats at about 7.40am. Humberside Police Detective Inspector Craig Scott said: "At 7.42am we came across a male laid on the footpath on Princes Road with an injury, for which he is now undergoing treatment for in hospital. At this point it is not yet known how serious his injuries are. "We are now continuing to investigate the circumstances in which he has come by his injury. We have officers at the scene and are making door-to-door enquiries. "The male is 23 years old and is from the area, and his family have been made aware." If you witnessed the incident or have any information, call police on 101. Updates will appear here.

Scarborough Athletic 0 Grimsby Town 3: New faces impress as Mariners clinch friendly away victory

GRIMSBY Town's trialists couldn't have wished for a much better afternoon than they enjoyed against Scarborough on Saturday.

Having only trained with the rest of Paul Hurst's squad the day before, the pair – who, while unconfirmed, are believed to be striker Joe Ironside and midfielder Adam Hinchliffe – helped Town to a comfortable 3-0 win over their Evo-Stik opponents.

Ironside laid on the opener for Ross Hannah with an unselfish assist while Hinchliffe doubled the advantage with a sweet volley – before a similarly impressive strike from summer signing Scott Brown rounded off the scoring.

Hurst had promised a more senior line-up than was on display at Clee Town in midweek and he was good to his word, with Hinchliffe lining up alongside Paddy McLaughlin in central midfield and Ironside partnering Hannah in attack.

The hosts started brightly enough with a succession of early corners that McKeown dealt with well, but at the other end, Ironside flicked a header straight at the Jason White before Hannah scooped a curled effort over the bar seconds later.

As he had in midweek, Mackreth started well and it was from his cross that Hannah laid off for Scott Neilson to shoot just wide.

Eleven minutes in and, when Paddy McLaughlin was brought down on the edge of the box, the Northern Irishman brought the best out of White with a fine, one-handed stop down to his right.

The Seadogs' stopper was called into action again seconds later to deal with Aswad Thomas' fierce strike before claiming at the second attempt.

White was certainly the busier of the two keepers and the former Mansfield Town man had to get down well to stop Hannah's deft flick just shy of the 20-minute mark.

Town deserved to be ahead second later when Mackreth evaded the despairing challenge of Paul Robson on the right and squaring for McLaughlin, who side-footed inches wide on the volley.

Hannah then skipped inside and dragged wide and it looked as though it was only a matter of moments before Town opened the scoring.

But back down the other end, a deep corner fell to Ryan Blott who brought McKeown into action with a half-volley that the Town stopper palmed over.

Scarborough spied another chance ten minutes before the break when Blott latched on to a straight ball, but the striker couldn't direct his lob over the advancing McKeown, and Hinchliffe brought the half to a close for Town with a dipping drive at White.

Town kept up the pressure following the restart and it took them less than five minutes to break the deadlock.

Ironside robbed the centre half of the ball, advanced on goal and committed the keeper before squaring unselfishly to Hannah, who tapped home into an empty net.

Had it not been for Toto Nsiala, the hosts would have drawn level five minutes later when Town were caught napping at a free-kick and Blott flicked past McKeown, only for the impressive centre-half to clear off the line.

The Seadogs went even closer just before the hour mark when Blott dropped a looping header onto McKeown's bar.

Former Town Youth-teamer Sam O'Malley entered the fray for Scarborough and only good defending from his old side prevented his current employers from drawing level when Shaun Pearson blocked Zeph Thomas' effort.

Hinchliffe had been steadily growing into his trial and it was the midfielder's sweet volley that doubled Town's advantage when he latched on to a knock-down on the edge of the box and fired home unerringly.

It was another stunning strike that put Town's third on the board when, after the ball ran loose on the edge of the box, second-half sub Brown caught a fine effort that flew into the top corner.

Hurst had called for another improvement on the midweek win over Clee Town and he got just that, with his two trialists catching the eye.

But whether they'll be pulling on a Town shirt again in tomorrow's trip to Harrogate (7pm) remains to be seen.

Drugs haul uncovered in raids on two more homes in Grimsby

HUMBERSIDE Police's tough stance on drugs continued after they recovered large quantities of class A and class B drugs during raids in Grimsby's Stanley Street.

Two police teams swooped on two separate properties on the street, which were just hundreds of yards apart, at 2.45pm on Saturday.

About 30 cannabis plants were found at the first property, which were thought to be worth around £8,000. The owner was away from his home at the time of the raid, but police enquiries are continuing.

At the second property, police recovered 15 cannabis plants, about 250 class A tablets thought to be ecstasy, and a small amount of amphetamine.

A male, believed to be in his 20s, was arrested and taken into police custody where he was interviewed.

Although carried out at the same time, the two incidents are not connected.

Sgt Neil Macrae, who led the operation, said he hoped the raids would encourage more members of the public to come forward with any information they may have about drug farms.

"It has been a very successful day, we definitely had a bit of luck", he said. "There were no problems at all and it went to plan.

"Both raids were based on information we received from Crimestoppers, which just goes to show how important the service can be.

"The raids were based on information we received from members of the public.

"We have acted on that information and the operation has been a huge success. We always encourage members of the public to come forward if they have any information.

"These raids just serve to reinforce Humberside Police's tough stance on drugs."

Officers secured both properties before knocking on the front doors, but received no answer from either home.

They forced entry into the first property, while at the second property the owner of the home returned to let them in.

Officers carried out a thorough search of both properties which lasted for the majority of the afternoon, and also involved taking any mobiles, laptops or any other electrical equipment which could help with their enquiries.

Sgt Mcrae added: "The officers involved all know what they were doing and have been doing this sort of thing for years.

"The two incidents are not connected, it just happened that the information we received was for two different properties in the same area."

To report suspicious activity in your area, call Humberside Police on 101, or 999 if a crime is in progress.

You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Trialists who impressed in Grimsby Town's pre-season friendly against Scarborough Athletic to get another chance

PAUL Hurst is hoping to take another look at his two trialists against Harrogate Town tomorrow night after both impressed on their 'debuts' against Scarborough Athletic at the weekend.

The pair – who weren't officially named, but were believed to be Joe Ironside and Adam Hinchliffe – both played 90 minutes of Saturday's 3-0 win over The Seadogs, with Ironside setting up the opener for Ross Hannah and Hinchliffe adding a stunning second before Scott Brown bagged a third in similar style.

Speaking afterwards, while Hurst couldn't say too much about the duo, he did reveal that he would speak to the pair with the hope of keeping them on board for longer.

"I can't say too much about them to be honest and that's not me being awkward but it's just the position that they are in," he told the Telegraph.

"I thought they both did pretty well on Saturday to be fair. It's never easy playing on trial as you're with completely new team-mates and, for one of them certainly, they haven't been training too much of late.

"They came through the 90 minutes and did really well. One set the opening goal up really well and the other one scored a good goal.

"There were things that I wasn't happy with, as a team, but I'm not going to pin those on them because we haven't done much work 'as a team' at the minute, but they certainly didn't look out of place and didn't do themselves any harm."

He added: "They only trained with us on Friday and that was their first contact with us, but I'll have a chat with them over the next couple of days and we'll see whether or not we'll take another look.

"One of the trialists I know quite a bit about and have followed his career and seen him play a few times and wanted a closer look. I was made aware of the other one by an agent and thought it was an ideal opportunity to get them both in.

"I'd like to have another look at them, but I need to have conversations with the players to see how they feel about things, but I don't think it's fair to make a final judgment, one way or another, after one game.

"But they certainly showed me some positives and what they can bring at the weekend."

A 23-YEAR-OLD man was fighting for his life last night after being found on a pavement in Cleethorpes with multiple injuries.

The man is said to be in a critical condition at Hull Royal Infirmary, where he was taken following an incident on Sunday morning.

As reported on www.grimsbytelegraph.co.uk, police cordoned off a block of flats in the resort shortly before 8am.

It is still unclear exactly what happened, but the investigation was focused on a third floor flat at St Joseph's Court, opposite the police station on Princes Road.

A window had been left wide open and crime scene investigation officers were taking swabs and pictures from that area.

It is understood the man was taken to hospital having possibly fallen out of the third floor window onto the ground below, where there was evidence that somebody had suffered injuries and had been attended to by paramedics.

However, this has not been confirmed and police are appealing for help from the public in piecing together what caused the man's injuries.

Part of the flats' forecourt and car park were sealed off while police carried out their investigations.

Detective Inspector Craig Scott said: "At 7.42am we came across a male laid on the footpath on Princes Road with multiple injuries, which he was taken to hospital for.

"We are now continuing to investigate the circumstances in which he has come by his injuries.

"We had officers at the scene and made door-to-door enquiries, but if any members of the public have any information or witnessed the incident, they are urged to get in touch with the police.

"The male is 23 years old and is from the area, and his family have been made aware."

Staff at the nearby Royal Court residential home said they heard a loud bang and raised voices coming from the area of the flats at about 7.40am.

Officers were also questioning residents of the flats as they left the area on Sunday morning.

One nearby resident, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "It looks like there could have been some sort of party going on into the early hours of the morning.

"But you shouldn't even be able to get those windows that far open, not that high up anyway. I think there must have been some sort of scuffle, but anything could have happened."

Officers at the scene also confirmed that the flat had been contained, and that enquiries were ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call police on 101.

Grimsby shopper steps up to save distressed homeless man from jumping off town centre bridge

A TRIP to buy his mum a birthday present led this selfless Grimsby shopper to save a stranger's life.

Daniel Pavone, 27, says he "didn't think twice" about stepping in to stop a distressed homeless man from jumping off the Grimsby Town Railway Station footbridge.

Onlookers contacted the Grimsby Telegraph to praise Daniel for his "brave" actions after he spent 30 minutes coaxing the man to safety.

Daniel, who is a surveyor, was walking past the bridge in Wellowgate when he spotted the man, who had climbed over the railings and tied a noose around his neck.

"I was heading into town to get my mum a birthday present and when I got to the level crossing, the barriers seemed to be down for ages," he said.

"I saw some people running off the footbridge looking scared and then noticed that a man had climbed over the barriers and was threatening to jump.

"I didn't even stop to think what I was doing, my instinct was that somebody needed to help him and so I went up to see what I could do.

"When I got there I could see that he had tied some twine around his neck and he told me he didn't want to live anymore because he couldn't even afford to eat.

"I just started talking to him and trying to reassure him."

While an onlooker called police, Daniel reasoned with the man and asked him not to commit suicide because of the many families and children who were passing by.

He also offered to take the man – who is believed to have been in his 30s – for a drink and a bite to eat at a nearby pub.

Daniel, who owns Heatsave, added: "He was really tearful and I actually started getting upset myself at one point.

"I honestly thought that I was going to see him die, but I just tried to keep calm and reason with him. I also shouted to the conductor at the train station to make sure no trains came under us.

"He eventually agreed to climb back across the barriers.

"I hadn't even realised the police had arrived but as soon as he did that they grabbed him and took him away. I'm sure anybody would have done the same in that situation.

"I didn't do it for any recognition, I just wanted to save his life."

Former Tollbar School student Daniel says he felt too "sick and shaken" to continue into town after the incident on Wednesday and so he headed to his mum Dawn's hairdressing salon, Maxwell's, in Town Hall Street, instead.

Dawn said: "He was white as a sheet when he got here. I'm always proud of him but hearing what he had done made me feel especially proud."

A spokesperson for Humberside Police confirmed that officers were called to the scene at about 5pm on Wednesday and that a member of public was talking to the man on the footbridge.

He was taken to Grimsby's Diana, Princess Of Wales Hospital and then transferred into the care of North East Lincolnshire Council.

Strictly Come Dancing stars including Susanna Reid and Aljaz Skorjanec reunited for spectacular dance show in Grimsby with Karen Hauer and Kevin Clifton

"GRIMSBY must be one of the most talented places in the world!"

Those are the words of Strictly Come Dancing champion Aljaz Skorjanec, after performing at the Grimsby Auditorium as part of An Evening With Karen And Kevin From Grimsby.

Kevin Clifton and his fiancee Karen put on the glittering three-hour bonanza after Flash Mob, a show they were originally planned to star in, was cancelled at the last minute.

So, the Strictly stars stepped in and put together the show, with a little help from parents Keith and Judy Clifton, to a packed audience on Saturday night.

And they were even joined by special guest Susanna Reid, who performed with Kevin on this year's Strictly, after making their way all the way to the final.

She said: "It was such an honour to come here and perform on Kevin and Karen's show, I couldn't believe it when they asked me!

"But I was only too happy to come, and what an amazing response it has been. I just want to thank all those in Grimsby for their support, how could I refuse performing the paso doble in front of them?"

Kevin and Karen performed a number of different dances, drawing standing ovation after standing ovation from the impressed crowd.

Kevin said: "We were feeling pretty nervous beforehand. It's not every day you have to put together such a massive show as this in just a couple of weeks, so we weren't sure how we'd do.

"It's great to finally get to this point, as we never really knew if it would really happen. But it was a great night and everything went smoothly.

"We just need to say a big thank you to all those who came and to all those who made this happen. So many people said we couldn't pull this off, but we managed to.

"We even managed to keep the secret guest quiet until now!"

His partner and wife-to-be Karen added: "It's always good to come back here! I now consider myself to be a Grimbarian, so this is like a home show for me."

Two other Strictly dancers – last year's winner Aljaz Skorjanec and his girlfriend Janette Manrara, who was paired with designer Julien MacDonald for her first season last year – also performed on the show.

Aljaz said: "It's great to finally be here in Grimsby. I've heard so much about it and I can now finally say I've performed here.

"I'm very good friends with Karen and Kevin, so it was an honour to come and perform with them as part of this fantastic show.

"I've been very impressed with the talent on show, especially in the competition. Grimsby must be one of the most talented places in the world!"

A new star was also born with the appearance of Kevin's sister Joanne, who has already signed up to perform in the next series of Strictly.

She retired from professional dancing in December 2013, having being crowned Ballroom Showdance World Champion.

She said: "It was really cool. It was quite weird dancing with Kevin again as the last time we did it was back when I was 13 or 14.

"But I'm 30 now and here I am dancing on the stage of Grimsby Auditorium. It's great to be back, and the routine was so much fun putting together – we just couldn't stop ourselves from laughing.

"And now I can't wait for Strictly to start. It will be something very different and something I'm not really used to, but I'm going to be on TV now! So that's amazing."

Three lucky competitors, who won the Grimsby Telegraph's competition to perform on the show with three Strictly dancers, took part in a mini Strictly-style contest, hosted by special guest Susanna Reid.

The dance novices performed a routine in front of the expectant audience after being paired with Kevin Clifton, Karen Hauer and Joanne Clifton, along with judges Aljaz and Janette.

Roof tiler Steve Courtney, 62, convincingly took home the glitter fish trophy.

There were also performances from contemporary act Alleviate, Irish duo Brosena and young stars from Clifton's Dance Academy.

Tragic meningitis victim Kacie Steer remembered forever in 'Butterfly Garden' at Immingham school

A SPECIAL garden has been opened in a touching tribute to a former pupil at an Immingham school.

The 'Butterfly Garden', as it has been named, has been created at the Canon Peter Hall CofE Primary School following months of hard work to get it ready for the visit of the East Midlands In Bloom judges this week.

It has been opened in memory of former pupil Kacie Steer, who tragically passed away last year from meningitis.

Kirsty Marris, a teaching assistant at the school, has been responsible for organising the garden over the past few months.

"It all started when we came up with the idea of creating a garden that the children could use to grow their own food," she said.

"And then it just escalated from there really. We want to teach the students about how they can grow their own food – going back to basics really.

"The children haven't had the chance to really see it yet as there's just been so much work going on, so we're delighted to be able to open it."

The garden includes a bridge, benches, several flower beds, arrangements and hanging baskets.

The school was able to buy a number of items thanks to several charitable donations from local businesses and organisations.

Ms Marris added: "We got hundreds of pounds, but more importantly we got items given to us, which really helped.

"For example, Jewsons gave us half a tonne of stones, and then B&Q gave us some bird houses. There's so much more as well.

"I've been planning it since April, and it's been non-stop since then. It's also a great way to recognise our former pupil Kacie. We have a plaque with her name on so she will be remembered forever.

"I'm really proud of how it looks, the children love it and it's also great to be involved with this year's In Bloom.

"But everything has been done by the children, they've worked so hard. I just planted the seeds for them!"

Kacie's parents Kelly and Anthony Steer both visited the school to see the garden.

As reported, their five-year-old daughter was full of life and enjoying swimming until she contracted an ear infection which led to the killer strain of the disease.

One day she was happily swimming at Immingham Pool and two days later fighting for her life.

"I think the garden is really nice," said Kelly. "It looks really good.

"My son Charlie and his dad have been coming down here quite a lot recently to help out to make sure it's ready for In Bloom.

"They seemed to have really enjoyed it, and you can tell a lot of work has gone into it."

Fresh pictures have emerged from the set of Sacha Baron Cohen's new movie Grimsby. As reported, the crew of Baron Cohen's film of the same name have transformed a port town in Essex into their very own Grimsby. The people of Tilbury certainly aren't impressed and are kicking up a storm after their streets were transformed into 1980s Grimsby. Local residents have been seconded as extras and shops have been adorned with Grimsby-style business names, including Maids and Brides, Grimsby Glass Merchants and Humberside Mini-Van Hire. One Tilbury teen told the local newspaper, the Thurrock Gazette, how she returned to the town after being away for a fortnight to find it had been transformed. The Ali G star visited Grimsby last year, and was spotted taking in the Mariners' clash with Cambridge United at Blundell Park. The film, due for release in September 2015, also stars Johnny Vegas and Baron-Cohen's wife Isla Fisher, as well as Penelope Cruz.

The new experimental traffic system around Grimsby's Riby Square is causing headaches for motorists. North East Lincolnshire Council is carrying out an experimental one way system in Grimsby to improve air quality and ease congestion, which started today. But an apparent lack of signage on the side roads is causing confusion, including at the Orwell Street and Nacton Street junction, where a number of cars have gone the wrong way down Nacton Street. There are no 'no entry' signs at the junction leading to problems. The week-long trial will end on Sunday night.
