A SPECIAL memorial plaque has been unveiled to mark the 70th anniversary of 550 Squadron starting its operations from North Killingholme - and the bravery of its pilots. A poignant ceremony took place at the firing range premises of Killingholme Full Bore Club - with the special guest a distinguished 93-year-old former pilot. Wing Commander Jack Harris served at North Killingholme during a spell starting in September 1944 and spent nearly six months with the squadron. He said he was very proud to unveil the plaque. It was his first visit to the Killingholme range, on part of the former airfield site, but he praised its importance in keeping alive the memory of former servicemen. A Lancaster bomber flew past as part of the ceremony for the unveiling of the plaque. Keep an eye out for full coverage of the occasion in the Grimsby Telegraph.

GRIMSBY Town's senior supporters have been quick to snap up the club's newly-introduced ticket offers.

This season, the club brought in a new 'Over-75' season ticket as well as an 'Ancient Mariner' offer, which entitles accompanied fans – over the age of 85 – to free entry into Blundell Park, on a match-by-match basis.

And ticket bosses have been delighted by the response so far.

Commercial assistant Jack Johnson said: "We've sold around 135 of our 'Over-75' season tickets so far and around half of those have been to new holders, which is very encouraging.

"But as well as the Over-75 offer, as a thank you to our older fans, we also introduced the Ancient Mariner offer and that has also proved incredibly popular

"The offers for our older fans is just the club's way of thanking them for all their support over the years and we're really encouraged by the response to them."

Kevin Hooper full of praise for Curtis Woodhouse's boxing career

NOBODY can ever take away what Curtis Woodhouse has achieved in boxing. That's according to Grimsby pro Kevin Hooper, who is a regular sparring partner with the former Mariners midfielder. Woodhouse was beaten by Willie Limond in Glasgow on June 27, losing his British crown in the process. But 'Super Hooper' – who is busy preparing for his clash with Liam Walsh at Manchester Arena – thinks his friend has proved the doubters wrong. He said: "I watched the fight and was obviously disappointed for him. "Curtis has done so well for the sport, and was unlucky to come up against a kid that was just better on the night. "He never stopped going, he never gave up and he was right there until the end. "Unfortunately he was on the wrong end of the decision. "People laughed at Curtis when he came from football into the boxing game. "But he achieved the biggest prize on offer – the British title – and nobody can ever take that away from him. "Curtis is a nice and humble guy, and he has worked so hard to achieve what he has." Keep track of the latest boxing news in the Telegraph.

Grimsby Town frontman Lenell John-Lewis aiming to step up a gear

LAST season may have been the best of Lenell John- Lewis' career so far – but the striker now wants to push on to new heights.

The 25-year-old made more than 40 league appearances last season, scoring nine goals in all competitions and weighing in with a string of assists.

Never before has the frontman generated those kind of statistics, but speaking to the Telegraph, John-Lewis insists there is more to come.

"From a personal perspective, last season was the best season of my career to date," he said.

"I haven't played so many games for a good few years and managing to do that was a real achievement for me.

"To get the goals was great for me as well – even though I'd have liked to have got more, but looking back, I can't deny it was a great season for me personally, even though it didn't end how any of us wanted.

"It's only a start though, and it's about building on it this season," he added.

"I can't live off last season – that's gone now and it's about bettering it this time.

"I know it only came about through hard work and that's what I'm going to do again this time around because if I don't, I could go backwards and I don't want that."

With boss Paul Hurst expected to draft in at least one new striker before the big kick-off on August 9, John-Lewis – one of only two recognised frontmen on Town's books – says he would relish that added competition.

"It's exciting to see who's going to come in over the summer," he continued.

"Competition is welcome and we need it as strikers to push ourselves. I need that because I know I can't rest on my laurels and think I'm comfortable in the team, just because of the number of games I played last year.

"Hopefully I can impress over pre-season, cement my place and be ready to go from the off."

Barclays Bank has launched a new two-year fixed rate ISA paying 2.02 per cent on maturity, or a monthly option paying 2 per cent. Savers can invest from as little as £1.

Additions are permitted until April 5, 2015, and three penalty-free withdrawals are permitted up to 10 per cent of the balance during the term; any withdrawals thereafter are upon closure of the account and subject to 180 days' loss of interest. Transfers in from other cash ISAs are also permitted. This deal is for savers aged 16 and over and can be operated in branch, by telephone or online.

This new two-year fixed rate ISA from Barclays Bank is highly competitive. Paying 2.02 per cent this deal heads straight to the top ten in its sector.

With penalty-free withdrawals and transfers in allowed, this deal offers more flexibility than many fixed rate ISAs on the market today and is likely to be a popular choice for savers looking for a high street brand.

BM Savings has increased the rate on its Easy Access ISA which now pays 1.55 per cent upon its anniversary, including a bonus of 1.05 per cent for 12 months. A monthly option is also available paying 1.54 per cent.

Savers can invest from as little as £1 and additions and early access to funds are permitted. Transfers in from other ISAs are also allowed. This deal is for savers aged 16 and over and can be operated by post only.

It also heads straight to the Moneyfacts.co.uk Best Buys. This is likely to be a popular product for those looking to kick-start their tax-free savings, however, savers will need to review the rate before the introductory deal ends to ensure competitive returns are maintained.

Norwich & Peterborough Building Society has reviewed its two-year fixed rate mortgage, which is now priced at 2.44 per cent. This deal is for all customers who borrow from £25,001 at 75 per cent loan-to-value.

A fee of £345 is payable and an incentive package of £500 rebate for first and second-time buyers as well as free valuation and free legal fees for remortgage customers is available. This deal also has the flexibility of being able to make overpayments by up to 10 per cent, make underpayments and take payment holidays.

This deal is reasonably priced in its sector. Couple this with a great incentive package which includes a £500 rebate for house purchase customers as well as free valuation and legal fees for those remortgaging and this makes a great product for borrowers looking to keep their initial costs down.

£215m windfall for jobs, education and transport will help Grimsby & Cleethorpes area

SCORES of major development projects across the south bank of the Humber are set to benefit from a near £215 million boost for the region.

The Government will today announce the first tranche of winners of its new Local Growth Fund (LGF), with Grimsby and Cleethorpes expected to benefit from millions of pounds of devolved money from private and public sector investment.

With Grimsby straddling both the Humber and Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs), the funding from Whitehall could unlock as much as £350 million of private and public sector investment.

The area is set to further consolidate its reputation as a centre for excellence in specialist educational skills, with a large slice of the money going towards training young people for the growing local renewables industry.

Projects include:

A new £1.75 million offshore wind training facility run by Catch (Centre for the Assessment for Technical Competence – Humber) in Stallingborough

A new £2.05 million environmental logistics learning hub by the Grimsby Institute to provide renewable and environmental technology skills for the low-carbon sector.

Cash will also be allocated to improving flood defences, helping to create thousands of new jobs, building thousands of homes and kickstarting new infrastructure projects, including transport improvements.

Among those is Barton Street, the notorious stretch of road that links with the A16 at Ludborough, which has been dubbed one of "Britain's Killer Roads". Junction improvements worth £4.2 million have been earmarked to upgrade key access routes to and from Grimsby in 2016-17, enabling the development of housing and employment sites.

Grimsby town centre will directly benefit from £1.48 million of junction improvements, and a move towards sustainable transport.

Welcoming the announcement, chair of the Humber LEP Lord Haskins said: "With the Siemens announcement, the growing offshore wind sector in Grimsby and the potential of the Able Marine Energy Park, we are realising our ambition to become a national and international centre for renewable energy."

Councillor Chris Shaw, leader of North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "We are delighted that these projects have secured support from the Local Growth Fund.

"Key to this area's development is the growing renewables sector. Major operations and maintenance providers are now based at the Port of Grimsby, and to help serve these, with the support of the LGF, we are going to provide specialist offshore wind training at Catch. Additionally, in the centre of Grimsby, a new £8.78 million infrastructure scheme will connect the north and south sides of the town centre to unlock some key development opportunities and high-quality public spaces."

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clee, acknowledged the Humber was fast establishing itself as a renewable energy hub "by equipping young people with the right skills for jobs in the local area; creating a new training facility for specialist offshore wind training and a new learning centre for renewable and environmental technology skills which provides funding for over 2,000 additional learners." Mr Clegg added: "This is a really important day for the people of Grimsby. Over the lifetime of today's deal we'll be investing a total of around £103.5 million in Humberside and a further £111.2 million across Greater Lincolnshire, to help safeguard or create up to 11,000 jobs, allow up to 7,000 homes to be built or refurbished to support major work on flood defences to reduce the risk to over 62,000 properties and generate up to £350 million in public and private investment."Prime Minister David Cameron said: "For too long our economy has been too London-focused and too centralised. Growth Deals will help change all that. They are about firing up our great towns and cities, boosting local economies and driving growth across the country. "This historic deal means real change for people and businesses in Lincolnshire and the Humber with big investments, including exciting plans to attract high-growth small businesses to the area. "By trusting local people, backing business and investing in infrastructure, skills and housing, we can create thousands of new jobs. And that means more economic security, peace of mind and a brighter future for hardworking people across the region."POLL: Does government help this area enough? Have your say

North East Lincolnshire Council is to carry out an experimental one way system in Grimsby to improve air quality and ease congestion. The council, working in partnership with Cofely, recently secured funding from the Department for Transport's Local Pinch Point Fund to carry out the work. Funding will be spent on works to improve air quality and also replacing the bridge bearings on the Cleethorpe Road flyover. A trial road layout will be put in place for one week from 11.59pm on Sunday July 13 in the Riby Square area. Motorists are warned that they could face some delays during the first days of the trial. The trial includes: • the implementation of a one way system in Riby Street/Orwell Street • no access from Freeman Street into Riby Square • no access from Riby Square to the A180 • no right turn from the westbound A180 into Riby Square • Changes to the exit lanes from Lockhill to the A180 roundabout. Local businesses and residents have been written to about the trial and have been invited to give their views as part of a through consultation on the scheme. Comments on the trial can be sent to a dedicated email address, A180Ribysquare@nelincs.gov.uk, or by using the pre-paid envelope that has been sent to businesses and residents in the immediate vicinity of the scheme. People can also give their views at two drop-in events to be held on Thursday 24 July at: • Oasis Gym, Orwell Street, Grimsby, from 6pm to 8pm • Grimsby Fish Dock Enterprises Limited, Wharncliffe Road, Grimsby, from 7am to 10am (for members of the Fish Merchant Association only) The scheme will also later see the introduction of traffic signals on the A180 eastbound that are designed to ease traffic leaving the dock area at Lockhill. The traffic signals will not form part of the trial layout. The work to Cleethorpe Road flyover to replace the bridge bearings will be carried out underneath the bridge so will have little impact on traffic.

Confirmed case of pupil with scarlet fever at Cleethorpes school

A school in Cleethorpes has confirmed that one of its pupils has contracted scarlet fever. Staff at Queen Mary Infant and Nursery School were informed this morning that one of their children had fallen ill with the disease. Liz Jeffrey, head of federation at the school, said: "It is just one case, which we found out about this morning. "We have provided information sheets for the pupils and their parents, and taken the advice of the NHS and HSE, and they have said there is nothing else we need to do as long as it's just a single case. "Hopefully it will just be an isolated case, but if not we will deal with it as and when it happens. But we have made sure to take all the advice from the experts. "The NHS did also tell us that there could be a chance of the pupil returning within 24 hours if they have started a course of medication and are well enough to return. "Most importantly of all the health of our pupils is paramount." It comes after Public Health England sent a warning out to parents, schools and nurseries in the North East Lincolnshire area to be vigilant to the signs and symptoms of scarlet fever as the disease spreads across the county. In the first four months of this year there had been 11 notifications of possible scarlet fever cases in North East Lincolnshire and a further 22 in North Lincolnshire. Overall, 550 notifications of possible scarlet fever cases have been reported in the Yorkshire and the Humber region until April, compared to around 300 during the same period in 2013. Anyone with symptoms of scarlet fever, which include a sore throat, headache and fever accompanied by a characteristic rash, should consult their GP. Scarlet fever should be treated with antibiotics to reduce the risk of complications. Once children or adults are diagnosed with scarlet fever we strongly advise them to stay at home until at least 24 hours after the start of antibiotic treatment to avoid passing on the infection. Scarlet fever is mainly a childhood disease and is most common between the ages of two and eight years. It was once a very dangerous infection, but has now become much less serious. There is currently no vaccine for scarlet fever.

JAMES McKeown is finally Grimsby Town's number one after three years at Blundell Park! Since joining the Mariners in 2011, the goalkeeper has established himself as the club's undisputed first choice stopper. However, the 24-year-old has always worn the number 13 shirt – not the number one as might be expected. That's about to change, though, thanks to a superstitious intervention from Town boss Paul Hurst. McKeown commented: "The gaffer told me it was unlucky for me to carry on with 13! "I've thought about moving to number one for the last couple of seasons. Growing up, talking to my dad, the aim was always to be number one for a club somewhere. "I know I've played a lot of games and, in a way, been number one here, but I've always had 13 on my back so it will be nice to wear number one next season. "It's just a number and I've never thought of 13 as being particularly unlucky for me – until the gaffer told me! "It might be the only chance that I get to wear number one so I thought I'd go for it. People who I've spoken to think it's a good decision – I never thought it would make that much difference to be honest. "But it is nice to look down on my training top and see number one on there."

A 75-year-old former East Lindsey District Councillor will face a retrial on a series of indecent assault charges. Philip Leivers, used to represent Chapel St Leonards on the council before he resigned in the wake of the allegations. He was convicted of abusing a young girl after giving her tickets to watch iconic acts including Madness, Dire Straits and UB40 for free while managing the Hammersmith Odeon in west London. The victim came forward to police in 2012 after watching a BBC News bulletin featuring Leivers as a Lincolnshire councillor talking about wind-turbines being built in his district. She also claimed he repeatedly raped her between 1975 and 1981 but Leivers was cleared of those charges following a trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court. But the jury was unable to reach verdicts on three further counts of indecent assault and one of indecency with a child. Leivers will have a new trial in February next year in front of a fresh jury. During his evidence Leivers admitted playing a game where he would try and guess the colour of the girl's underwear before making her show him. He said he only touched the youngster twice when she was 11 or 12. He was convicted of three counts of indecency with a child by the jury but acquitted of seven counts of rape, four counts of indecent assault and a further count of indecency with a child. Leivers, of Maplebeck, Sea Bank Road, Skegness, Lincolnshire, was bailed pending his retrial which was fixed for February 16, 2015
