Charity urges parents not to reward children with alcohol for finishing their exams

Parents are being urged not to give their children alcohol as a reward for finishing their exams after it emerged more than 15,000 intoxicated youngsters were admitted to hospital in just three years. The charity Drinkaware says around one in four parents will give their children alcohol this summer to help celebrate the end of the school term. Its report found that on average, children aged 14 to 17 will be given nine units of alcohol - the equivalent of four cans of beer, a bottle of wine or a third of a bottle of vodka at post-exam parties, holidays or festivals. The study also found that more than half (54 per cent) of parents had given their child a drink outside of the exam celebration period, with 86 per cent admitting they had done so because their child asked for it. Drinkaware said that 15,000 children were taken to hospital between 2010 and 2013 because of excessive alcohol, yet 20 per cent of parents have no understanding of any medical guidance surrounding children consuming alcohol. Elaine Hindal, chief executive of Drinkaware, said: "The average amount some parents are providing is equivalent to a whole bottle of wine, and that is more than enough to get a 15 year old drunk. "No parent wants to think of their child out on their own being drunk and vulnerable, but effectively that is what we could be facilitating by giving alcohol as a reward. "It is illegal for parents to purchase alcohol on behalf of someone under 18. Worse still, it normalises a culture of excessive drinking among young people. "We want to reassure parents that not all young people drink alcohol, and that it is important to support children to celebrate without it, whether they are going on holiday for the first time with their friends or attending a school prom party."

Fire service urges drivers to take extra care on roads during period of industrial action

Humberside Fire and Rescue is urging drivers to take extra care on the roads while there are less firefighters at work. It comes as further industrial action has been planned for Saturday, June 21 between 10am and 5pm. Dene Sanders, Chief Fire Officer at Humberside Fire and Rescue Service, said: "It is not just keeping safe from fire that needs to be on people's minds. "Being safe on the roads is just as important. Last year we attended more road traffic collisions than house fires. During industrial action, I urge people to take extra care on the region's roads. "We do have a level of service in place during the strikes, but we have fewer resources available than usual." There are numerous reasons why road traffic collisions can happen. Humberside Fire and Rescue Service say there are a number of simple steps that can be taken to reduce the risks. These include; reducing your speed; never using a mobile phone while driving; taking care when overtaking; always wearing a seatbelt and taking extra care in adverse weather conditions. CFO Sanders added: "Road accidents often happen when people get distracted. I urge people to think about their safety on the roads as well as the safety of others. "The safety of those in our community remains a priority throughout periods of industrial action, but I urge drivers to play their part. "These tips may seem obvious, but by adhering to them it will reduce the risk of an accident happening and keep our roads safer."

This is the first picture released of builder Wayne Jennings, who died earlier this month. It comes as a caravan salesman accused of assaulting a man in the village of North Somercotes earlier this month faced a new charge of manslaughter when he appeared before Lincoln Crown Court this morning. Jareth Wadner had previously been charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm on Wayne Jennings following an incident in Jubilee Road, North Somercotes, on Sunday, June 1. But today the prosecution amended the charge to manslaughter after Judge Michael Heath was told that Mr Jennings, 43, has since died. Andrew Scott, for the prosecution, told the court "The defendant was before the Magistrates' Court on a charge of section 20 GBH. "The complainant was Wayne Mark Jennings. That charge was properly sent to this court but since that date Mr Jennings has sadly passed away and the Crown will be preparing an indictment with a count of manslaughter." The new charge was put to Wadner at today's hearing but no plea was taken. Wadner ,25, of Louth Road, South Somercotes, was granted conditional bail to appear back before the Crown Court on 12 September.

A CLEETHORPES day care centre is celebrating an outstanding Ofsted report.

Based at Reynolds Children's Centre, Reynolds Street, the day care facilities were inspected in March.

Ofsted inspector Clare Johnsonreported it is home to skilled teachers and the children are making excellent progress in their learning. She was also full of praise for the professionalism and dedication of staff.

She said: "Children are very happy and their self-esteem is fostered through the close bonds they form with staff.

"The manager, senior staff and staff all work extremely closely together and the result is a very effective team who prioritise children's education and welfare."

Childcare manager Karen Bunce was delighted with the report.

She said: "We are extremely proud. It highlights the dedication, hard work and commitment of our childcare team.

"Ofsted recognised that the manager and staff are a very effective team who prioritise children's education and welfare.

"We are also proud of the partnership we have had the privilege to develop with our parents and carers, and all other agencies who advise and support our work.

"We are delighted to have received this accolade and will endeavour to ensure our child care setting continues to provide the very best experience for all our children."

The only improvement that the centre has been advised to make is to enhance the already excellent monitoring systems, by considering further ways for staff to observe each other's teaching practices.

Councillor Ros James, portfolio holder for children services at North East Lincolnshire Council, said: "We are extremely proud of our recent outstanding Ofsted which highlights the dedication, hard work and commitment of our childcare team.

"It is great to see that all the staff and parents have such high standards and Ofsted's rating truly reflects this."

Parent Katie McClellan said: "The nursery itself is great, it is a big space with excellent facilities.

"But even more importantly the staff are amazing. The work they do is outstanding, they are always professional in the work they carry out but they go over and above what is just required and show real care and affection."

Charlotte Taylor, another parent, added: "All I can say is that Reynolds Nursery is absolutely brilliant. My son has been there since he started aged 10 months, and is now almost four and he loves going every time. The staff are very well trained in all situations, very professional and they always have time to listen to any queries that you may have.

"They obviously deserve this great report."

Defender Alan Goodall is open to Grimsby Town offers after being released by Fleetwood

ALAN Goodall hasn't yet had a call from Grimsby Town, but the defender would 'seriously consider' a return to Blundell Park this summer.

The 32-year-old is on the lookout for a new club having been released by Fleetwood just days after helping them seal promotion to League One.

Goodall's return to the Cod Army first team came as a result of the short, but successful loan spell he enjoyed with the Mariners earlier on in the season.

And now a free agent, Goodall told the Telegraph that he would be interested to speak to Town, should boss Paul Hurst decide to pick up the phone.

He said: "I'm open to all offers, but as yet, I haven't had a phone call from Grimsby.

"In the cold light of day, I've got to look after my family and so, if there's a job opportunity comes up, then I've got to seriously consider it.

"I enjoyed my time at Grimsby last season – the move was exactly what I needed to be honest.

"It got me playing regular football again and I'd like to think that I helped Grimsby out a bit as well.

"It got me back into the Fleetwood side and meant that I could play a part in helping the club get promoted.

"Obviously, there were mixed feelings with winning promotion and then being released, but that's football and I've got to move on now.

"I wasn't there for long, but I really enjoyed it at Grimsby and playing under Paul Hurst, who I've got a lot of time for, so I would definitely be interested."

Having some spent time together at Fleetwood, Goodall is good friends with new Town signing Scott Brown, who he rates as an 'excellent' acquisition.

And he's revealed that his former team-mate has been quick to call for a Blundell Park reunion.

"Browny is a good mate of mine and a very good footballer," he continued.

"I'm not just saying this because I'm his mate, but Grimsby have done really well in signing him.

"The time that I spent with him at Fleetwood, it was clear to me what a good footballer he is – he's a great signing for Town.

"He's already said about joining him at Grimsby this summer and you never know – you can never say never in football.

"If there's an opportunity to come back, I'd consider it."

Huge Grimsby jobs boost likely following major planning application

HUNDREDS more jobs look set to be heading to Grimsby after the owner of the town's flagship business park lodged an application to build a huge new industrial unit. The multi-million pound 126,000 sq ft speculative development is being brought forward at Europarc by Wykeland, with warehousing, distribution or production highlighted as the likely use. The Telegraph understands negotiations with a number of potential operators are progressing. In a statement to North East Lincolnshire planners, Wykeland said that jobs created by the unit will be of "great benefit to the local and wider area". It comes after it was revealed this week that Cofely Fabricom is bringing nearly 100 jobs to Europarc, creating a new corporate base and relocating staff from Immingham and Brigg. It follows a path trodden by fertiliser giant Yara three years ago. Construction is also underway on infrastructure to open up 'The Village', a further 6.5 acres for a hotel, restaurant, public house, nursery, gym and other commercial and retail units. A September 16 determination deadline has been set.

Louth MP Sir Peter Tapsell calls for Tony Blair to be impeached over Iraq war

Tony Blair should be impeached for misleading the Commons on the eve of the Iraq war, Louth MP Sir Peter Tapsell has said. Father of the House Sir Peter said backbenchers should use their "ancient" powers to haul the former prime minister back to Parliament. Sir Peter, who first entered the Commons in 1959, was one of a handful of Conservative MPs to vote against the Iraq war in 2003. Speaking at Prime Minister's Questions today, Sir Peter challenged David Cameron to act. He said: "Are you aware of the growing sentiment that, as the publication of the Chilcot Report is being so long delayed, the ancient, but still existing, power of backbenchers to commence the procedures of impeachment should now be activated to bring Mr Tony Blair to account for allegedly misleading the House on the necessity of the invasion of Iraq in 2003?" Mr Cameron did not address directly the query on Mr Blair. But he said: "It is important we see the results of the Iraq inquiry. It has had access to all of the papers, all of the officials, all of the ministers, and, frankly, I would say that if the Iraq inquiry had started when this party and the Liberal Democrats suggested it, then actually we would have seen it published by now. "But MPs opposite - including, incidentally, (Ed Miliband) - voted against starting the Iraq inquiry on no fewer than four occasions." A House of Commons Library note said the last impeachment took place in 1806 - but that the "procedure is considered obsolete". It no longer exists in the standing orders of the Commons. The goal was to ensure that when a "peer or commoner is accused of 'high crimes and misdemeanours, beyond the reach of the law or which no other authority in the state will prosecute' ", Parliament can offer a remedy. The briefing note said historically, it had been "directed in particular against Ministers of the Crown". According to research from the library, on the last occasion it was used Lord Melville (Dundas) was charged by the Commons, but acquitted, of misappropriating official funds. Before Melville, the last impeachment had been against Warren Hastings in 1787 in relation to his role in India - a trial which lasted seven years, ending in his acquittal. The last case on purely political grounds was that against the Tory Ministers in 1713 for their part in the negotiating the Treaty of Utrecht. The Jacobite lords were impeached in 1716 and 1746 for rebellion.

Poundstretcher has closed one of its Northern Lincolnshire stores. Workmen have already moved in to transform the interior of the premises in Brigg. Poundstretcher - a major name on the high street - shut up shop in Wrawby Street on Saturday after many years spent trading in the market town. Window signs now ask passing shoppers to take their custom to the firm's outlets in Scunthorpe - on Lakeside, Skippingdale and Station Road. Through the signs, Brigg people are also being thanked for their "loyal custom" in the past. A spokesman for the discount retailer said it had been unable to agree terms for the renewal of the store's lease. He said: "We are always looking for new locations and Brigg as a location is one we would still want to be in. We will continue to search for properties." Poundstretcher was one of the few shops in Brigg town centre that used to open on Sundays. Its former premises are now available to buy or rent through agents PPH.

Facebook launches new app for users to share photos and videos

Social media giant Facebook has launched a new app to help users share photos and videos. Slingshot, the second app from Facebook's Creative Labs, allows people to share their everyday moments with lots of others at once. But there is a catch - people can only see what has been shared with them if they "sling" something back in return, such as their reaction to a photo or video. They can, however, simply "swipe" the shot away. Slingshot has been designed so that "everybody is a creator and nobody is just a spectator", and so that "when everyone participates, there's less pressure, more creativity and even the little things in life can turn into awesome shared experiences", the team behind the app said in a blog on the Facebook website. They wrote: "Photos and videos that don't stick around forever allow for sharing that's more expressive, raw and spontaneous. We can connect the same way we like to live: in the moment." They added: "With Slingshot, we saw an opportunity to create something new and different: a space where you can share everyday moments with lots of people at once." The app is available initially in America on iPhone (iOS7) and Android (Jelly Bean and KitKat).
