UKIP leader Nigel Farage has tonight claimed that Labour has a "serious challenge" for the Grimsby seat.
He was talking to BBC national news following the town's veteran MP Austin Mitchell's controversial claim in a Sunday newspaper that Labour would win the seat "even if it selected a raving alcoholic sex paedophile."
He has told the Grimsby Telegraph that he can't remember making the claim or even talking to a reporter from the newspaper in question.
But Mr Farage told the BBC; "He is making a very cynical comment about the electoral system in this country.
"He thinks that anybody could win for Labour in Great Grimsby.
"I'm not so sure about that because there is a serious challenge there from UKIP."
