THE number of people claiming out of work benefits during December has dropped, new figures reveal.

Grimsby's JobCentre Plus has seen a reduction in the number of people claiming Jobseekers Allowance during December with figures showing there are now just 3,879 people out of work across Grimsby, Immingham and the surrounding area.

The figures highlight the unemployment rate dropping below 6% for the first time in six years.

Country wide, job vacancies have risen by 127,000 to hit a 14-year record high and there are now around 700,000 job opportunities across the country.

Wages are also increasing above the cost of living, meaning more money in people's pockets. Figures from the Office for National Statistics show that regular pay was up 1.8% and private sector pay was up 2.2%, ahead of the inflation rate.
