Grimsby Town defender Shaun Pearson thinks victory at Gateshead can ignite Conference form

VICTORY in tomorrow night's FA Trophy Second Round replay can re-ignite Grimsby Town's hopes of Conference promotion.

That's the message from defender Shaun Pearson, as the Mariners prepare to face Gateshead for the second time in four days.

Neither side was able to break the deadlock on Saturday, meaning they will have to do it all again at the International Stadium (7.45pm).

The winner of the tie will go on to meet either Stockport County or Wrexham, who face off this evening.

And with a crunch TV clash against leaders Barnet on the horizon, Pearson says cup progression can aid Town's league ambitions.

He said: "Having the replay is one of those things and we have got to look forward to it.

"Some of the other bigger sides lost on Saturday, but we made sure that we were still in the hat for the next round.

"We have an opportunity to get back on track, and hit our top form.

"Hopefully we can get a win tomorrow, and then we will have a good chance of doing well in the competition.

"Obviously we want to make sure we get out of the league this year, so winning the game will put us in a good frame of mind for Saturday.

"We obviously won 6-1 there earlier on in the season, and we have a good opportunity to get another mental edge on them."

Clear-cut opportunities were few and far between in the first encounter, with only Nathan Arnold and Pearson himself going close.

He added: "I thought we played okay, and for most of the game we was in control.

"We never quite had that killer edge, or that quality in the final third – it was just lacking."
