Grimsby Town having FIVE frontmen gives Paul Hurst welcome options

THE arrival of Ollie Palmer does not mean other Grimsby Town strikers will be leaving the club.

As reported, the 22-year-old arrived at Blundell Park from Mansfield on Monday – signing a one-month loan deal.

It means Mariners boss Paul Hurst now has five frontmen at his disposal.

But while Palmer is expected to challenge Lenell John-Lewis and Jon-Paul Pittman for a starting berth, both Ross Hannah and Hamish Watson still have a welcome place in the squad.

Hurst told the Telegraph: "I need options, and want that competition for places in the team.

"Our aim was always to bring in another striker this month, and we have done.

"I will assess things as they move along, but while I've brought Ollie in, there are no guarantees it will work out for him – as it may or may not for any player when they move.

"But from watching Ollie train, he can certainly improve us so we will have to wait and see if he can warrant a place in the team."

Hannah – who was regularly paired with John-Lewis last season – has found game time limited during this Conference term.

And the popular Watson, meanwhile, can only point to two substitute outings since arriving on a short-term deal from New Zealand.

Hurst (pictured) added: "We have spoken to Hamish and, of course, he wants to try and get more time on the pitch.

"I think he's happy in the environment he's in, and if we feel it's right to then we will look to keep him.

"It's nice the fans have taken to him but, in real terms, he hasn't yet done anything to warrant that really.

"Some of the other lads that have done it over 20-odd games, who then have an off-day, then get a bit of stick about it.

"It's nice he's been given that backing and confidence boost, but it's maybe a case of 'new kid on the block'.

"We are in no rush to make a decision on him, or decide if he will stay for a longer spell."
