A PHILLIPS 66 refinery worker has been found guilty of carrying out the "planned and deliberate killing" of his former wife before setting himself up with an alibi.

Wai Hong Tsang, 33, of Bluebell Road, Scartho, looked stunned as the jury foreman returned a guilty verdict at the end of a month long trial at Lincoln Crown Court yesterday.

Residents of the quiet Scartho street told of their shock after being told of the verdict.

The jury of six women and five men deliberated for just two hours before coming to their decision.

Tsang had denied carrying out the murder on June 17 last year. He was remanded in custody and will be sentenced on Monday.

Judge Michael Heath told him: "The sentence will be life imprisonment because that is the mandatory sentence for murder.

"What I will have to give consideration to is deciding the minimum period which must elapse before you can be considered for release by the parole board."

The jury was told that 29-year-old Mingzi Yang died as a result of head injuries after being battered to death inside her mid-terrace home in Sincil Bank, Lincoln.

Tsang, who had worked at the Phillips 66 refinery at Killingholme since 2008, initially gave a statement as a witness rather than a suspect and lied about his movements on the day of the killing.

But he was later described as "a congenital liar" by prosecution barrister Peter Joyce QC.

Tsang claimed he had left his home in Scartho and that he had driven directly to Sherwood Forest to go mountain biking.

Police found evidence that he had travelled via Lincoln stopping off for two-and-a-half hours in a secluded lay-by on the edge of the city giving him enough time to cycle to Ms Yang's home, kill her and cycle back to his car.

CCTV footage showed a cyclist travelling to the area of Ms Yang's home and then cycling back out again and a witness came forward to confirm that the cyclist was of Oriental Asian appearance.

The cyclist was riding a red mountain bike of a make and style similar to one owned by Tsang, which he claimed to have disposed of weeks before.

Tsang was then arrested but denied he killed his former wife and denied he wanted her dead.

During the trial Mr Joyce, prosecuting, told the jury: "This was a planned and deliberate killing.

"She was killed for a reason. The only person who had a reason and a motive to kill her was him [Tsang]. This wasn't a random killing."

A spokesperson for Phillips66 declined to comment on the case.
