The Leader of Hull City Council has confirmed he is in talks with organisers of the Cleethorpes Air Show with a view to taking the event across the water.

As reported, organisers of the Air Show, which attracted about 300,000 people to Cleethorpes this year, have cancelled next year's event due to funding problems.

Last night, Hull City Council leader Steve Brady revealed there had been talks about taking the event to Hull.

He said: "We're talking to them at the moment.

"It was a fantastic air show on the south bank and it drew huge crowds to the area, so we're seriously considering it and talking to the relevant people to see if we can bring it to Hull.

"We're going to be UK City of Culture 2017 and we want to show people we mean business."

Organisers believe the Air Show, which costs a six-figure sum to stage, generated between £7.5m and £8.1m for the area's economy.

But a lack of financial backing has made holding it increasingly difficult.

Hull is likely to be a front runner in the race for a new venue due to the Humber estuary.

However, because of the time needed to plan such a vast event, it is unlikely an air show would be held before 2016.
