SHOPPERS have been promised a "more modern approach to retail" if a major redevelopment of Grimsby's famous Ramsden's Superstore goes ahead.

The proposal, described as one of the "most exciting schemes" in the area for many years, was thrown open to the public at a consultation event at Blundell Park.

As reported, a parnership between Ramsden's and Hull-based property specialists the Wykeland Group has seen the launch of the Cleethorpe Road Retail Park scheme, which was revealed earlier this month.

It would see the existing superstore, which is said to be underused, replaced by 64,000 square feet of retail space made up of a number of units. Ramsden's would likely retain a presence, though other firms would be invited to move into the surrounding spaces.

Wykeland head of development Guy Evans described the scheme as the "pure regeneration" of the area. He stressed that the Ramsden's furniture store was not affected.

He said around 200 jobs would be created. The superstore currently has around 45 full-time staff, with a further 25 part-time.

Mr Evans said the redevelopment would take 12 to 18 months, but added that the existing superstore building might not need to be demolished for two or three years.

"We have got a long way to go and we have got to find enough retailers before we push the button to progress with the development," he said.

"The main thing is the regeneration because the site is very underused. The majority of the units were houses that have been converted for retail and are empty."

Mr Evans said Ramsden's intented to keep all jobs open.

Lynsey Jones, 28, of nearby Duke Street, said she welcomed the regeneration of the area.

"I think it's a lovely idea," she said.

"It's going to be a lot more accessible for people like me who have a pram.

"I was shocked when I first heard about it as I moved to the area and got used to Ramsden's being there. It has obviously been there for many years."

Kim Bateman, 56, said she was not surprised to see Ramsden's adapt during the economic downturn.

"It looks good but a lot is going to depend on whether they can fill the units and how much it will all cost," she said.

"There is nothing else this side of town really. It will help the small businesses, which can be in one place. I think there will be plenty of interest."

Another resident, who did not wish to be named, said: "If this keeps the store going and adds another 150 jobs then it is a good thing."

Mr Evans said the thoughts of residents and stakeholders would be taken into account before an outline planning application is submitted in the next few weeks.

"This isn't fixed and the idea is that if there's input from people that we will try to include that," he added.
