ONE of the area's most successful hotels has revealed the secret of being top in the hospitality industry.
The Ashbourne Hotel will be taking on two work experience students as part of the Grimsby Telegraph's Your Life: Your Future campaign.
As reported, the initiative is aiming to place 200 people from the Grimsby Institute and North East Lincolnshire Council's Change programme in work experience placements to inspire and put them on the career ladder.
Working in a hotel can lead to a variety of successful career paths.
Andrew Smith, the manager of the Ashbourne, in Vicarage Lane, North Killingholme, said: "The key things to working in a hotel are dedication and having good people skills.
"You have to like working with people in this industry. It is hard work and long hours, but it can be very rewarding especially after a big event like a wedding.
"We often have guests write to us saying thank you and that they have had a good time. We all enjoy working here and take pride in what we do.
"There is a good team here and we are looking forward to having new people come in on work experience.
"What we are looking for are happy people with a positive outlook.
"There are a lot of career paths to follow in a hotel, including being on reception, behind the bar or part of housekeeping and maintenance as well as management roles.
"In the past we have given people the basic skills they need and they have gone away to work all over the world, but have come back to us again."
The young people on work experience at the hotel will be given a taste of a variety of services across the business.
In-house wedding co-ordinator Rob Walton said: "I went on work experience and when I was 16, I started working in the industry and have worked my way up since then.
"When I was 16, I never thought that I was going to become a wedding co-ordinator.
"If you want to work in this industry you do have to work hard, but you have to also enjoy it.
"Everyone has to start somewhere and we are looking forward to showing some new people the ropes."
