CROWDS flocked to the Meridian Events Arena in Cleethorpes to celebrate the cars, music and fashion of bygone days.

The Cleethorpes Classic Car And Vintage Festival took place over the weekend, boasting a variety of attractions for both young and old to enjoy.

Organised by Graham Chapman Classic Cars, the event featured vintage cars, buses, fire engines and tractors, while live bands performed throughout the festival.

There were also drama performances, including a cabaret show called The Big Tease by the Cats Pyjamas, and free circus skills workshops run by the Ladybird Project for the kids.

Meanwhile visitors got into the spirit by donning their smartest vintage attire.

Among them were Fulstow couple Rachael Wragg and Michael Finch, who run rock 'n' roll jive classes as Ginger & Finch.

Rachael, 25, said: "We go to vintage festivals all over the country and it's convenient that there's one so close. We love the vintage thing. We have even got a 1950s house. We love the dancing and the music."

Michael, 28, said: "We have come for the clothes, the cars and the bands. We like dressing up and looking glamorous."

Grimsby couple Anthony and Corine Johnson also have a passion for vintage music and clothes.

Anthony, 30, said: "I like the music, she likes the clothes."

Corine, 38, said: "I just like the old fashioned glamour.

Ladies were ladies and men were men. It was a more genteel time."

Among the artists performing at the event was jazz singer Moll Amour.

Although born in South Yorkshire, Moll's parents and her grandfather were singers in Cleethorpes.

Moll, who now lives near Louth, said: "My grandad was a crooner at the Winter Gardens in the 1950s and my parents are both singers. I grew up singing along the prom.

"I like singing jazz – they are really well-crafted songs – and I appreciated classic design. The 1930s cars go hand-in-hand with the music."

Her partner Charlie Hayes said: "I restore vintage cars as a hobby. Myself and Moll both have similar interests and we come to events like this together, mixing the cars and the music."

Also performing at the event was Grimsby actress Sara Beasley, a member of Breakwater Theatre Company.

She acted out a series of monologues in the guise of Betty the Barmaid and Rhona from the chippy. She said: "I just love everything vintage. The monologues are about working women in the 1950s and they give people a flavour of what life was like."

Car enthusiasts were out in force at the event – with a mixture of classic and more modern vehicles on show.

Philip Charlesworth, 65, of Waltham, who brought his Mercedes SL350, said modern cars are no match for their vintage predecessors.

He said: "All the lines on these cars are different. All the new cars look the same these days. I enjoy looking at old cars, bikes, buses, tractors – anything."

Clifford Branner, 62, of Broughton, who brought his 1955 Vauxhall Cresta Series E to the event, said: "I have come for the rock 'n' roll and the 1950s cars. I've had this car about two years and it's nice to show it off. I've had no end of people coming round admiring her."

Showing off a more modern vehicle, in the shape of a Japanese import Mitsubishi F20 was Euan Gloyn, 36, of Humberston.

He said: "I used to do these kind of events all the time but this is the first one I have done for a while. It's nice to come and do something local and I think Graham Chapman has done a very good job organising this one."
