GRIMSBY Town earned their first win of the Conference season with a stunning 6-1 victory at Gateshead this afternoon.
Scott Neilson and Lenell John-Lewis were the heroes, scoring two apiece at the International Stadium.
The Mariners opened the scoring in the sixth minute in fortunate circumstances as Craig Baxter fired past his own keeper from 25 yards out.
Neilson doubled the advantage nine minutes later, lashing home a superb 30-yarder to the 288 travelling fans' delight.
It was 3-0 three minutes before the break when a mix-up between Ben Clark and Alex Rodman allowed Lenell John-Lewis to fire home his first of the campaign.
It took just 45 seconds of the second period for Town to make it four – despite a triple substitution from Heed boss Gary Mills.
It was Neilson again, who made the most of some poor defending in the Gateshead penalty box to hammer a low drive into the bottom corner.
The hosts pulled one back through the impressive Marcus Maddision in the 55th minute.
But Craig Disley nodded home in the final ten minutes following Jack Mackreth's cross, and John-Lewis stroked in a sixth in stoppage time to cap a fantastic day for the Mariners.
The home support applauded Town off the field after a fabulous performance in the north east.
