THIS "inspirational" 90-year-old is bearing the pain of a broken shoulder and hip to pack shoe boxes of treats for needy children.
Doreen Taylor, a resident at the Cloverdale Care Home, in Butt Lane, Laceby, is fighting the pain of her injuries suffered in a fall last year for the cause.
She has helped with Operation Christmas Child, who will send 25,000 shoe boxes to children in Romania and Siberia this Christmas, for 12 years – a duty she gained humbling satisfaction from.
Before her fall, Doreen – who is also blind in one eye – would knit and crochet presents for the children, but this year her injuries won't allow it so instead she is packing the toys and treats from other people.
True to her generation, the former Land Army trooper said nothing will stop her doing her bit.
Doreen said: "I am used to work. I couldn't sit down and mope so I had to try to carry on. I have done it a long time and I like doing it. I find it interesting and rewarding to do it for these poor children."
Daughter-in-law Annette Taylor has hopes Doreen will act as an inspiration to others who are able to help but haven't yet.
She said: "Doreen would always knit and do other things like that for the boxes, but after her fall she couldn't do it anymore. We decided this year we would try to carry on as normal, so I am bringing things in so she can still do something to help.
"It is lovely to help these children who are living in poverty, we get a lot of feedback from the people who go there who tell us how much a simple box can mean to these poor children."
